I'm around chapter five in Anne Bronte's Agnes Grey. Makes me NOT want to be a nanny, let me tell you. After this I think I'll need something cheerful!

I just finished a pretty short read (100 pages epub +extensive appendix) called "Pink Noise" by Leonid Korogodski. It's a "posthuman tale" and, to me, it was akin to falling down Alice's rabbit hole.... review here

Last night I finished the first book of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan. I really liked it and I've already planned in the second book in my next 10 to be read books. Some things were a bit predictable but overall it was really good and original. It also made me interested in mythology so I have to see if I can find any good books on that topic.

I started with the seventh book in the Pendergast series, The Book of the Dead, which is also the final book in the Diogenes series. Hopefully it's as good or better than the two other books in the trilogy, those I like best in the Pendergast series from what I've read up to now.

Count me in! I just finished Richard Dawkins' The Greatest Show on Earth, a VERY detailed account of the science of evolution. I'd always understood the basics of this field of study but had no concept of the exquisite nature of the details. An absolutely fascinating read.

Next: Takedown by Brad Thor. Hey I need a trashy thriller every once in a while!

And interesting trilogy (if occasionally a bit cinematic).
And, alas, not a trilogy, but the start of an unfinished series. The first two books at least had a beginning, middle and end (of a kind), but Firstborn just leaves lots of plot threads hanging, and even ends with the introduction of another hanging plot thread.

The first and second are worth reading. I found the third rather bitty and unsatisfying. Several things introduced, that one hopes will end up all tying together, only to have things come to a rather abrupt halt before they do.

In addition, there's more hand-waving about communication between places in an unsatisfying way.

Ah well. Now to pick the next item from my TBR pile.

The only problem with the Cleo Coyle series is I miss this old coffee joint I used to go during college. They roasted their beans in house and it was phenomenal.
You know you can roast your own beans at home--my husband does.

Are they going to throw me out for being OT?

Oh, I was also going to say that I don't care so much for Cleo's series--the ghost one y'all were talking about earlier. It's weird because I normally like ghosts a LOT and I'm into paranormal (obviously). But for some reason that Alice Kimberland series didn't do it for me. It could be that I started on the second or third book (accidentally) so I missed some of the pertinent...relationship development. Dunno. I gave the book away because I wasn't even lukewarm towards it.

I love mythology! Here's a thread discussing books on the topic, if you're interested. I'm glad you enjoyed The Lightening Thief.

LatinandGreek, another Croatian named Border Collie joined up on the "Introduce yourself" forum.

I finished Triggerfish Twist. It is very violent, but at the same time I was laughing so hard that I kept waking Tim up. Murder and intrigue in a quickly becoming white trash neighborhood in Tampa. I plan to get the rest of the books in the series. I highly recommend it.

Have you read the Thistle & Twigg mystery series set in Alabama? I read the first one (linked here), and thought it was interesting.

It's effort for me to brew a cup of coffee, I can't see myself roasting my own beans

But interesting that you mention it, I like the coffee series better than the Bookstore series, against all odds. Love stories about books and bookstores, and there seems to be more substance to that series as well, but I find myself enjoying the Coffee series more. I guess that's why I just recommend books, not review them. I have no idea why I like them!
