				Wifi on or off?

Is there any advantage to having the Wifi on or off when just reading? Does it save battery power to have it off?

Yes it saves the battery when it is turned off. There is no real reason to have the WiFi turned on when you are reading. I normally only turn on my 3G (I don't have the WiFi option) when I know I have books to download.

I always keep it off. Just turn it on for a minute to download all the stuff I had waiting. Then I turn it right back off. It's only purpose after that is to suck up battery life .... assuming you are just reading.

On my K2, I almost always leave wireless off -- but there is a problem. I don't know if it was fixed on the K3.

The issue is that wireless keeps the clock synched. With wireless off it can get out of step. As a result, books in the sort that goes by "newest/latest read" (or whatever it is called) can get out of order. Its no big deal. I just turn on wireless for a minute when I start noticing this problem -- once a month or so. |

Turning off the wi-fi increases battery-life to a near-obscene length.

With regular - but not excessive - use, I get an average of just over two weeks on my Sony. With wi-fi off, the K3 is still running at nearly two months. |

Like the others have posted here, I only have my Kindle's WiFi on when I want to download a book from Amazon.

Slightly off topic - for those with the 3G + WiFi version of the Kindle 3, can you turn off both 3G and WiFi so that you can save on battery life, or is one service always running? Holly |

I keep wifi off most of the time. Battery life is awesome. The Nook's is horrible in comparison.

I will say though that if you keep it off and you also want to sync the last place read, it's a pain to remember. If I was reading the same book on multiple devices often, I'd probably tend to leave wifi on. |

I know that I can turn my 3G off. I don't have a WiFi option but I would imagine that you turn both off and on at once. The Kindle looks for a WiFi connection first and if it doesn't find one goes to the 3G. At least, that is what I have read.

That and you have to be able to turn off the 3G and the WiFi otherwise it could not be brought on a plane. Last edited by ProfCrash; 12-06-2010 at 02:40 PM. |

Even if you're on WiFi, the 3G modem is active and connected to the cell network. It doesn't disable the 3G modem if you're on WiFi. |
