I loved the first Kindle 3 Ads here in the UK where the ads never even made it clear what a Kindle was or what it did ... But they expected people to buy an electronic device without knowing what it was ...

I've seen ads for iPad, Kindle, Nook Color, Sony. Interestingly, Amazon has recently started airing "Kindle Book" commercials that are about the books, not the device. They show a woman who reads on her iPhone and then gets an Android Phone, and all her books go with her.

But they forgot to mention that she's just lost all her apps.

do you think it is becoming the kleenex of the ereader world?

Kindle is advertised regularly in the New York Times Book Review (full page ads) and in display ads in magazines like The Atlantic -- that is, places where people who read books are likely to see an ad -- in addition to TV and YouTube. I have yet to see Sony do the same.
It might be different where you are, but here the only readers you ever seem to see in real world book shops are Sony (and the odd no-name Chinese import). That, I would say, would be a very good form of advertising.

I have to add to my answer, as I just last night saw a color nook commercial. I've also seen those commercials about how the book travels from kindle to kindle app. I hope kindle isn't the kleenex of the tech era.

That's true, and people are so amazed, when I show them how it all works... I have sold my Kobo and Kogan to a couple of my work mates.

It was clear what you meant... I am just looking at the idea that I'm already so very tired of explaining to people that, no, it's not a kindle, yes, there are other readers out there, no, it wasn't that I wish I'd gotten a kindle and I couldn't... I think kindle was synonymous with ereader, and now nook has managed to become a name as well, but that still leaves me to explain that they aren't the one games in town.

yeah here too, Kindle dominates the advertisments on TV, I saw a nook color commericial once but haven't seen one since. Amazon has bought a ton TV commericial spots.

Here in America is all Apple and all Kindle

I don't think so, I don't think people are using the word kindle to describe all ereaders in general. I think the average joe THINKs that the Kindle is the ONLY ereader on the market.

The nook and Sony's ereaders and certainly not Kobo are not totally household names. The Kindle is. The nook is gaining some grounds but has a long ways to go catch the Kindle in brand awareness.

Got to give credit to where credit is due. I'm not a big fan of the kindle and Amazons walled garden but they do know how to advertise and pretty slick ones as well.
