I believe the point Rizla was making concerned normal usage=no crash versus "hacking" (non-normal) and memory reformat (or other non-standard behaviour) thus not being unexpected.

I agree. However, he also gave us the reason for this crash: He was fiddling around with the very core of it, resulting in the crash.

Yes, and you should be able to use what you have instead of having to transcode them. Besides, it's far from certain that a transcoding of all your LRFs to, say, Epub, would "fix" what I believe to one or more dodgy files that causes your ereader to crash.

Edit:

I need to learn to double check for further pages if I have been away:

Yes, I keep doing that... you're carefully constructing a reply, thinking about the best way to put your point... and by the time you submit your reply someone else has already made the same point.

I would say it is the LRFs.
Are there any of the books that are not commercial that you could post here with your settings so we can try it as well?

I'll try and find one. I tried The Count of Monte Cristo and couldn't get it to happen.

Attached is Great Expectations.lrf.

This is how I created the crash on my 505:

1) downloaded the epub from MR
2) loaded it into Calibre (IT IS AN OLD VERSION OF CALIBRE, 0.5.10)
3) Changed the author name to Dickens, Charles in the Metadata
4) Converted it to LRF
5) Downloaded to my 505 using Calibre's download specific format to main memory
6) Went to Books by Title
7) Selected G H I
8) Selected Great Expectations
9) The book formatted (the spinning wheels)
10) I went to continue reading, the title page came up
11) I pressed the magnifier button (to get to medium), and the formatting started
12) Wait a couple of seconds (the arrows were turning), and pressed the magnifier button again. Some time after, the screen went blank and it restarted

Once it restarted, It wouldn't crash for that book again. It did do a reformat for the three font sizes successfully. This is what always happens when it crashes for me: it crashes on a book, but after the crash, I don't have any problems with that book.

I was able to reproduce the crash with the same book:

A) I then deleted the book and repeated steps 1-10. I then pressed the magnify button, and some time latter, the title was displayed in medium.
B) I then pushed the magnify button again, and some time latter it crashed

Like I said before, I tried similar steps with the count of Monte Cristo, and no crash. I wasn't able to get it to crash for The Woman in White.

Important notes:

This was on my 505, I didn't have access to the 650.
The version of Calibre I used was an old version. I like this version because I seem to have greater success creating LRFs in the format I like.
I believe the firmware version on my 505 is the latest commercial version. There is no modded firmware or hacks installed on the 505, and the 650 should have had the latest firmware.

Also (for AGB), I haven't been able to test the charger on the 650 yet, but still plan to.

I think you need to decide to make the effort to either go through your books and find the offender(s), and/or decide to use a newer version of Calibre that has had some bugs fixed, or simply learn to live with the crashing. You can't have it both ways.

To me, you're barking up the wrong tree: You don't want to spend time looking for possible corrupt files, and you don't want to use a more recent version of the software to do your conversions.
If not, well, I don't see the point of posting about your ereader crashing, to put it bluntly.

Did you read my last post? Did I not make it clear that it crashed? Also, I'm not sure what good going back and finding which books will crash and which won't. I don't want to modify Calibre, and I don't expect Sony to release any new firmware for my problem.

I'm perfectly content to use my reader the way it is. I don't want to upgrade to the lateset Calibre version; I understand it has a ton of useful new features, bug fixes, performance enhancements, ... BUT I couldn't get it to format the way I would like so I made the decision to stick with an old version (and I don,t want to use epubs).

Yes, I read your last post, hence my conclusion and comment on it: You want it to magically stop crashing, but don't want to do anything about it - not even basic fault finding.

On the third book I tried, it crashed. It repeatedly happens (to me) on that one book. How more basic can you get?

As far as the magically comment, I'm going to put you on my ignore list.

You've just made the point that others have been trying to make in the quote below... doesn't that suggest it's that book and its conversion... try doing the conversion again but via an intermediate conversion, say to html then lrf. You know what causes the problem so change what's happening... cause and effect... if it doesn't work then re-source the book... it's free and available in many versions from different places...

edit: have you checked the disk that came with your 505... my wife's has Great Expectations on it... in lrf.

I wasn't able to reproduce the crash on a 350. I'm confused when you say it's on your 505 because I thought the 650 was the problem?

I didn't have the old version of Calibre to compare with. You might upgrade to the most recent version.

Also, between steps 11 and 12, I recommend not pressing buttons while the formatting is still going on (while the spinning arrow is present).

I must ask what I know is a dumb question ... but why would someone convert an Epub to lrf? It would never occur to me to do that, although granted I'm fairly new to E-reading.
