Juncos are supposed to be the clean-up crew that eats what the other birds (and the messy squirrels) spill on the ground. The ones here sometimes eat directly from the feeder.

I just looked them up in of my bird books and yes Juncos are the ones I'm seeing. Book says they will come to feeders, but are most comfortable on the ground where they scratch for seeds and insects.

I wish I had some that did that here! my bird feeders are in what is supposed to be my herb garden. I have all sorts of things growing here that should not be. some years the squirrels are more active here, and some less. when they are active, they keep the area cleaned up |

Spring approaches it doth seem...
The ponds are all un-frozen for the first time since before Christmas last year ! We have many spring bulbs starting to show - especially snow-drops. The Blue Tits are investigating the bird-box (in recent years they've been beaten by House Sparrows). The geese are all moving away northwestwards. The general state of the garden, though, is depressed after the snow and is very muddy and water-logged (though not as wet as I'm sure some are!). Plans I have for this year - I wonder if they'll come to fruition ,,,,, ![]() How's everyone else ? |

No gardening here yet. January in the Midwest is too early to even think about it. Everything's still buried under snow. Last frost date here is May 15...
Like KK, I might start some things indoors, but it's even too early for that. |

I'll start planning, and maybe sowing, when I get back from holiday in February...
