About halfway through Matterhorn and liking it, though the misery is relentless. That's war for you. It reminds me of The Naked and the Dead though manages to feel original. You can tell the author spent many, many years on this and writes from experience. The writing is great.

I had started another book yesterday that I downloaded on smashwords (and paid more than I normally do on it) after reading good reviews. It was really awful. I couldn't keep reading it. Either they had no editing at all or a really terrible one.
Awwww shucks, ma'am . I did really enjoy it, though, and read and enjoyed the second one, also. Warning: The second one ends with a twist, so you may want to buy both the second and third so you don't have to wait to see what happens next!

He actually advised me that if I wanted to get his novel I could look on BitTorrent . I have a lot of books on my TBR list at the moment but when I'm done with those I think I might opt for the BooksOnBoard giftcertificate and fake US address trick so he gets his money.
Oh good grief. If he said that, he could have just as well sent you a PDF or some other form to convert to your reader type.

Just finished Janet Evanovich's Two for the Dough as with the first part I think it's okay and funny but it just doesn't grip me.

I started with the first in the Percy and the Olympians series, The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan. I've only read the first chapter but it's promissing.

I'm still laughing about that, I've never heard of an author or artist of any kind suggesting such a thing!

I agree; it's rather unique to hear an author be so straight-forward about this. But if you really think about it, it's not all that surprising. Fans in that particular country can't currently buy his book (legally) at all, so telling them to download it illegally isn't taking money out of his own pocket... and good word of mouth might even increase sales when a publishing deal is eventually worked out. It's advertising!

If the first few Evanovich's don't grab you, the rest probably won't either. They were super good (IMO) for the first maybe 8. After that, they really get silly. Thus...

You can only carry the slapstick so far, so the series devolved into romance genre, with Stephanie playing Ranger and Morelli off against each other - would serve her right if they became interested in each other and cut her out entirely!

Just finished Hominids by Robert J. Sawyer and quite enjoyed it. Like most of his novels it's quite cerebral so not for those looking for action packed sci-fi. I'll have to keep an eye out for the rest of the books in the trilogy, although I hear that the rest aren't that great.

Now I have to decide whether to start Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds or Excession by Iain M. Banks. Choices, choices...

I have been reading a lot lately, but got lost reporting on them here. So here goes with the most recent:

The book-before-last was Child of the Northern Spring. It is a sympathetic re-telling of Queen Guinevere's childhood. I enjoyed very much and recommend it to readers who are interested in Arthurian legends.

The most recent book I finished was The Year We Finally Solved Everything. It bothered me. Gave me a case of the heebie-jeebies. What lengths will a basically ordinary person go to, that sort of thing.

Today, I started Triggerfish Twist. It is set in Tampa. Quite funny scenes of violence and nosy neighbors. I've barely started it, so I will report on it later.

To me, the first two Evanovich books were good, but the novelty wore off and I never finished the third book. The gals I worked with read them all and shared around the books. They loved them, as many people do.

Love Rick Riordan's books-- at least the Percy Jackons series, and his two new series, beginning with "The Lost Hero" and "The Red Pyramid."

And I actually think her best books were in the middle of the bunch. She was definitely silly all the way through, but silly in a fun way.

I just finished reading "The Storyteller" by Sharon Tillotson. It was a slow read for me, but somewhat thought-provoking. It's about a Soul and rediscovery and past lives and whatnot. I reviewed it on my blog.

It would have actually been okay with me if it had devolved into "romance" if that romance implied picking a guy and then solving mysteries. I'd have to say it evolved into a high school-like soap opera...

Not to pick on Storyteller, but it just happens to be about one of those themes I detest reading (past lives.) Past lives??? Who the heck has time for a past life??? I can't keep up with the one I've got!!!!
