I did not follow the details of that entire issue but what if Amazon wrongly sells a book again? If it were illegal or civilly wrong, wouldn't they be required to pull if off a kindle or have they determined to deal with "fixing" things another way - pay off the offended author/publisher?? Just curious.

I assume that Amazon will take the loss and pay off whoever owns the rights if it ever happens again due to the PR disaster of the 1984 book. That said, people always say that any PR is good PR so maybe they won't

A case that it didn't actually happen in?

If the publisher demanded it was removed from all Kindles they wouldn't really have any choice over it. But the point remains that removing content from Kindles is something that Amazon built into them. I can't really see how that would be a mistake.

I have that exact colander, approx 60-70 years old but have never employed it in that exact fashion (statement). It has traveled from Da Bronx to a series of residences across the US.

Same with any ebook reader that has WiFi and a store you can download from. Sonny and nook come to mind but they should also have learned from Amazon's mistake.

Seriously, have you ever made a bad mistake in your life? How does/would it feel to have people never give you the chance to do and be better.

They now contact you by email if there is any issue with a book you've downloaded. That's what their mistake was, they didn't let people know what they were going to do before hand. In the case of 1984 there were other copies of the book available that were authorized. They should have contacted the people who downloaded the unauthorized version and asked them to delete the book and reimburse them so that they could buy one of the other versions.

Plus, the ability Amazon has to come like a thief in the night and steal books off of your eReader (sarcasm intended) is easily circumvented:

1) Leave your wireless turned off. If they had a way to remotely turn on the wireless feature -- or a timed phone home feature, they would have utilized it in the case of the 1984 fiasco. The fact that the book didn't disappear off of Kindles in which the wireless was turned off should ease the minds of the overly paranoid.

2) Back up your purchases on some other storage device.

3) Don't buy a Kindle.

Because the kindle uses someone elses network for starters. How can amazon monitor someone elses system? Why would amazon want to pay more to use for bandwith in hunting people down?

Way back in the day when Nintendo released their game system in 1985 they rigged it so that it didn't allow for 3rd parties to release things on it without their approval....until people made modchips that allowed for imported games and so on....Atari went overboard with their 7800 to the point where it had higher encryption (at the time) than NASA!

at this point with the internet there is very little way for companies to pull a fast one like what you claim. Don't you think by now EFF would have made a recommendation to not buy the kindle or by that matter the nook?
