I'm thinking that some files are corrupt, wrecking havoc. It might not even be files it can read, but which will show up in finder/windows explorer when connected. I have a portable recorder (well, a couple), one of them has both a harddisk and cf card (slot). I use the harddisk for storage of things such as portable apps (besides the recorded audio, of course). But the entire recorder freezes when browsing the harddisk (via the recorder) if there is a .dmg file on it. It records just fine with it on the hdd/cf card, but you can't browse anything. So, in short, my bet is that it's either some file format present in storage, or it's a corrupt file somewhere. If I were to problem solve, I'd wipe everything, format the memory and pull blocks of ten files over at a time, checking each time. This way, when the problem reappears you will only have to take a closer look at your latest 10 items. I hope the OP finds out what is wrong, but I have to say that it really doesn't speak well on the credibility account that he claims that it's impossible to read while charging from a wall wart. At least he could have found the thread about all the problems with Apple chargers and Apple-compatible chargers. |

True about a couple of presses but OP wanted a test using multiple option key presses? I do agree about file problem though and I'd do much the same to test it...

I can't reproduce any of these problems. I go into a collections, press Options over and over, no crash.
It absolutely must be a specific book (or several) on the device causing the problems. |

![]() Just for the record, my 650 has been stable, solid, and absolutely delightful from day one. I've created numerous collections, changed them, deleted a couple, moved things around, changed titles using Calibre (for those danged series where it's hard to keep track of what comes next --so I add numbers), deleted books, and just played, etc.-- all with no trouble whatsoever. I prefer to view pdf files on a larger screen, so I use my computer, which works fine for me. I have tested out some lrf downloads versus epub, which worked just as well, but I just go with epub for all books now, using Calibre to convert if necessary. I spent a full two months doing many hours of reading on this site and others to determine which reader would be best for me, and I could not be any happier that I finally chose the Sony -- it suits me perfectly, I love the quality, and I have no regrets. ![]() Off to bookland now .... ![]() |

There is no special reasons I'm pushing the options key twice. When I first got it, I didn't read the manual, so just tried stuff. I thought that pressing the options key again (once I was already in options), it would get me out of options. It took me a couple of times to remember to get out of options by touching the [X] on the screen. I came to the 650 from the 505, so touching the screen for me isn't always intuitive.
![]() Thank you everyone for trying to reproduce MY problem, that clearly nobody else is experiencing. Quote:

And to everyone... I'm sorry for saying negative things about the 650. I had it for limited time, and these were my initial impressions. I'll go back and edit my initial post to try and make this clear. |

No need to edit your first post. Everyone has responded to what it says, so after three pages, I think you should leave it alone.
No need to apologize about saying bad things about an inanimate object. It really doesn't matter. The thing I reacted to was the things that just weren't factually true. But, anyway, try the thing with wiping the entire thing, and then add things in blocks. If I had something that did that constantly, I'd be annoyed as hell. This way, by adding things a little at a time, you will either find the culprit(s), or you will find that it's the hardware that is at fault. The latter is a bummer, but the first is most likely solvable. |

The wall-wart thing. Yes, yes, I know you said "I think", but the whole paragraph suggested that it was impossible to read while charging from a wall-wart.
However: I.t. d.o.e.s.n.t. m.a.t.t.e.r.!. Instead of focusing on what I said about you suggesting it was impossible to read while charging from a wall wart, you should focus on what I and others have suggested about the fault finding. The thing is, if your 650 crashes constantly, it is either a file or several files that causes it, OR it's hardware related. Go do some fault finding as several of us have suggested, instead of focussing on something that won't give you a better experience of your purchase. That disclaimer is funny, though ![]() Last edited by AGB; 12-01-2010 at 09:44 AM. |

A quick way to do it would be to wipe it, and then choose ten files you want to read. Then tomorrow or the day after you take ten more, or perhaps you'll find an hour somewhere along the way to do some of it in bulk/in sequence.
You can even use an SD card to do it with. Assuming you have a card reader in your computer, that will be the easiest way to do it. Anyway, I hope you get it sorted, and good luck with it all ![]() |

No need to apologize for trashing 650.
All of us are entitled to have an opinion. That's why there are so many different readers. We have different needs and requirements. I know for sure, there are people who love 700. I would rather read paper book then use this abomination ![]() To each its own. I hope you learn to enjoy the reader, or return it and get something that suits you better. Btw., I also misunderstood your comment regarding wall charger. I thought it was very odd that you cannot read when using wall charger. I thought you have some faulty one. I didn't manage to crash mine once--in fact the memory reformatted itself, but that's because I was trying to hack memo functionality.
Anyway, why use lrf's? Use epub's. |
