I haven't read his others, I should check them out. Have you read "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer?

I finished Preston & Child's Dance of Death from the Pendergast series yesterday. It's the second in the Diogenes trilogy. I liked it, it's about as good as the first in the trilogy, Brimstone but I like the ending better. Brimstone had a cliffhanger, which I hate in books (especially with series when I try not to read them all in one go). This ending set up the story for the last in the trilogy but in a way I can read a couple of other books before returning to the series. I've started with Janet Evanovich's Two for the Dough although I'm enjoying it it isn't really doing it yet for me, but I've only read chapter one so hopefully it'll improve. Next it's either The Shining by Stephen King or The Lighting Thief, first in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, by Rick Riordan. |

Just finished 'The Reapers are the Angels'. Probably my favourite read this year so far, such a wonderful book that just happens to contain some zombies. Not sure what to start next. |

				Just Kids - Patti Smith

Started: Just Kids - Patti Smith bio about Robert Mapplethorpe and herself. It was written to fulfill her promise to him on his deathbed. It is the story of their pact to become famous together (and beyond). I read the first part, skipped to the endmatter and read it and am now back reading through. I wouldn't say the writing is engrossing, but the telling of the tale and the personal insight are enthralling to me as these are two artists that have always captured my interest. No I haven't read that one but the description sounds good. Have you read The Finest Hours by Michael J. Touglas or Until the Sea Shall Free Them by Robert Frump? Both are excellent nautical survival stories. Until the Sea Shall Free Them is very sad.

Next: Time's Eye by Arthur C Clarke and Stephen Baxter. First in a trilogy, that I'll either removed from my reading list, or read straight through, depending on how this one goes. | |

I'm reading Pat Conroy's My Reading Life. It is about the books, writers and teachers that shaped his life. My TBR list has grown considerably as I make note of some of the books he praises. |

I read several shorter shorter books over the holidays. For the 15 hours driving home and back I listened to the audiobook version of Heinlein's Farmer in the Sky. It's pretty good but not one of his best. I also read Hannah Tinti's The Good Thief. It's an excellent read. I think it's aimed at the YA market but seems pretty violent for that. Think Oliver Twist in early 19th century New England. All Judgment Fled by James White was good. It has the same premise as Rendezvous with Rama. And then there was Miracle and Other Christmas Stories by SF writer Connie Willis. It's a collection of holiday-themed short stories. There are a few comedies, a few poignant short stories, a murder mystery featuring a Hercule Poirot-like detective, and a couple of essays on how much Willis loves Christmas and what to read and watch for Christmas. I particularly liked the comedies Miracle and Newsletter. The Good Thief and Miracle are available as ebooks. |
