I succumb to peer pressure. If the book is a classic then I feel compelled to continue even if it isn't grabbing me. If the book is a "beach read" bestseller and it doesn't work for me, then I quit.
I feel the pressure to finish it because I've been told I'm supposed to like it. I don't know why I would care; it isn't like I would end up discussing it at a cocktail party. |

I've read too many good books that started slow to give up early. I will read at least halfway and usually by then I will finish it. Love or hate the book, I will give the author a chance but I certainly won't buy anymore of their work if my first experience was a let down.

If the book is just slow, I'll try to give it maybe a quarter of the book to pick up before I give up on it.

Same goes for me. I do stick with a book a bit longer than I would usually if it came highly recommended from a trusted source / friend.

I'll generally give a book 100 pages or so before I decide if it is worth continuing. I figure that if the author can't establish a plot, develop (at least the main) characters, settle into a pleasing style of writing, and grab my attention by then, they probably won't in however many pages are left.

Usually, I find I need to give a book a second chance if it's outside my preferred reading genres.
I can generally tell right away if a book isn't working for me if it is in a genre I read frequently. |

I would read farther than the first chapter. I usually give books a chance by at least reading the first few. But, if it still doesn't interest me I quit at that point. Another book that came with great reviews but I hated is Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I just couldn't stand another minute of it and deleted it regardless of how many others thought it was great. |

I used to finish every book I started but not any more. Life is too short to read bad books.

"Life is too short to read bad books." I love that.
I know that's true. My time is worth something. I'll read a little more tonight (IF I can pull myself away from watching Dexter on netflix!) and if it still doesn't click, I am going to quit. |

![]() I agree that "life is too short to read bad books". We were all forced to do enough of that in school. |

![]() Because of that, I tend to be cautious about whether or not I like a series even if I struggle with the initial reading. There are several books that I had difficulty starting, but then became a favorite book once I was able to get into it. If I have trouble with a book, I will either set it aside to read later, or I will read it a little at time while I "take breaks from it" to read other books at the same time. (I think I finished about a dozen or so other books while trying to get through Moby Dick.) |

If possible, I usually read the first paragraph or two of a book before I buy it. I can tell pretty quickly if I'm going to like it or not.

Dexter gets my vote, too! Not too thrilled about the current season but past seasons were great.
Don't forget the Dexter books, too. Different from the TV series but the first two or three are excellent. |
