There is no such thing as gravity, it's a local variation in the space-time continuum.

So I had an interesting night last night. I went to an anniversary party for a local social magazine, thinking it might be fun. Get there, blegh. It's all these people trying very hard to be cool but failing miserably. Bunch of girls in basically prom dresses (it's a cocktail party, people!!), and this is supposed to be for a "luxury" magazine. First problem: we go to the upstairs bar, wait a good twenty minutes at the bar (jackasses kept sneaking in line and then ordering 10 drinks). When we're about to go up, I notice the bartender takes glasses from the bar, walks to the back, keeps one in hand, then sneakily wipes it on the back of her shirt and uses it (although it was for one of the said sneaky cutters, so I didn't say anything). We immediately get out of line. I need a drink, but not that badly. So we skip the party and go downstairs to the restaurant bar.

We go to leave, and get in line for the coat check. First someone completely butts. The coat check girl was terrible, and we're waiting five minutes (if not more) for each person to get their coat. We're about to go up and this girl walks right in front of us saying, "It's OK, I work for the magazine." So I start getting mad, saying nasty things (unfortunately, my mom stops me). I'm fuming, but luckily we had gotten the editor's business card when we got there. The girl wanted a cigarette, so she felt the needs to cut in front of 15-20 people to get her coat first. Grrr..

So turns out she was a local newscaster, with a facebook page. I'm really trying to resist the urge to write something nasty on her wall. Anyway, the whole thing was really tacky and I'm mad I spent money on it, but at least it gave me something to complain about!

We've been together for 7 years, had rings for the last 5. Amusing that you mention it though... I do all the cooking and she cleans. We are both grateful for the arrangement. I hate dusting but love cooking and she could burn boiling water with her culinary skill.

I probably would've gone to the Memorial Service for the late David Thompson, Prime Minister of Barbados this evening, had it not been for the guest speakers who are known to talk for too long. I'm in no mood to attend a 3 hour long service.

Perhaps you should invite a few of them to am MR party, and show them how it's done. Never mind, we don't want riff raff making our parties dull.

Hey! That is exactly the same arrangement we follow. For some reason I can't stand washing pot and pans. (Dishes I don't mind but prefer not to.) I love to cook and she just barely tolerates the job. She's good at it but doesn't enjoy it. The arrangement works out very nicely!

My wife is mostly a stake & potatoes type of person. I used to cook a lot, but now it's mostly simple stuff with a few surprises thrown in now and then.

That's the rant part. Now the funny part.

We've been married for 22 years. The whole kitchen/cooking bit is very casual, although I do the washing more often than she. But in some ways I'm a slow child. After about 10 years of marriage it suddenly dawned on me as I watched her doing a bunch of pots, pans, and dishes.

If she really likes what I made, she'll do the dishes.

Japanese restaurants... bah humbug. They should be called Japanese restaurants that have red and white checkered table clothes!

99% of the Italian restaurants in Japan will offer ONLY pasta or pizza. Both will feature sauces or toppings that are distinctly Japanese, i.e. very seafood oriented. Taste is quite good, but I'd love to be able to order a veal parmigiana, Ossobuco, Alto Adige, speck, bagna cauda, pancetta, coppa and salami, mortadella antipasta, ANYTHING other than just pasta or pizza! If I want those tastes, I have to special order the ingredients and prepare it myself... including special ordering the veal!

I can certainly sympathize. The only really good Italian restaurant in Eastern Pennsylvania closed down 6 months after we moved here. We've tried restaurants mentioned in the gourmet magazines and those mentioned by the locals as being "The Best Italian Restaurant, bar none". After 7 years we've given up. The best I've gone to are in New York and Boston.

And as for good Mexican restaurants in Pennsylvania, there are none. The best Mexican restaurants have been in Florida and Virginia.

Chinese food in eastern PA is a mixed bag. Some have one, or possibly two, good dishes. But no one restaurant has more.

Somehow I can't see a Mexican restaurant doing well in Japan.

Oddly enough, there are TWO excellent Mexican restaurants in this area. One of them, my favorite, is only a few kilometers from our house! The other is in downtown Osaka, about an hour's train ride away. Both have very authentic dishes, great variety, and good prices. Both have chefs who are Japanese, but trained in Mexico.

The Chinese restaurants go the same way the Italian ones do... All the tastes are Japanese rather than Chinese. They even use Japanese soy sauce instead of Chinese soy, and the flavor of those is day and night! Most of the dishes are thickened with a HUGE amount of corn starch, giving the dishes the consistency of mucilage! YUCK! Fortunately, I can cook most Chinese dishes at home as the ingredients are easy to get here.
