Either here or Kindleboards had a thread about "recovering" that initial shipping screen. Someone did post a picture of it. I guess they wanted to check out the device and make sure it was working but then restore it to BRAND NEW with that screen. No way to recover it I gather.
Here's a link to the other site if such reference is permitted: http://www.kindleboards.com/index.ph...c,41214.0.html Last edited by FF2; 11-28-2010 at 03:31 PM. |

Here's a Kindle 3 unboxing video from YouTube which you show how the Kindle arrives.

Yeah. Its completely switched off when it is shipped so it doesn't drain the battery. You see the Kindle tree + boot progress bar when you first slide the power switch.

Turning it "on" from the "off" state does not require a boot-up. I've tried explaining it before, but it's difficult; the best way to understand is to just try it: Hold the switch to the right for about 7 seconds, as it says in the manual. The screen goes blank, and the Kindle is "off." Now, slide the switch again, just like waking it from sleep, and count the seconds. (Mine takes only about 1 full second.) It returns to the same screen you left it on. It's not anything like starting it up from a restart or reset. So, for the K3, at least, the "off" state is not really like a computer's "off" state, but more like another hibernate or sleep, but without the screensaver, and I expect the wireless turns off, even if you left it on. (The only reason I like the ability to do this is that it allows me to disable the auto-sleep/screensaver functions and have it turn on/off only when I want to.) |

btw is the sleep mode activated automatically after X minutes? For example if I'm reading a single page for X minutes without pressing any buttons, does it suddenly go to a screen"saver" ?

By default, 600 seconds without user input => screensaver. And 60 seconds after that => suspend. A short flick of the switch toggles between on and screensaver.
~7s is a full shutdown (or not, you shouldn't ever need to switch it off anyway, unless you intend to let it sit unused for a large (ie. months) period of time), ~15s is a hard reboot (battery disconnect, which explains why your Kindle must be unplugged for this to do anything).
