My device was shipped with 1.0, spite later than date you mentioned.
Probably packed days|weeks earlier.

I can't speak for Borders but here in Canada Chapters/Indigo offers the firmware 1.4 update to all original Kobo users, you simply bring your Kobo into the store and we update it for you and reset the time/date while you shop/wait. My advice is to contact your local Borders and ask them if they have this service.

I bought it in September, but the box had been previously opened, so it was obviously someone's return, so I can't be certain how old it actually is.

No. I didn't realize that it was opened until I got it home. It even had a couple of books on it that the previous person had purchased. The unit was the last one that Borders had, so I ended up keeping it even though I was kind of annoyed.
