Thanks dordale. I would do that, if I was 100% sure I wanted to switch before buying. Does anyone know, if I go into a sonystyle store, do I get the trade in credit instantly or would I still have to send it in first and wait? I may be tempted to do that if I get the $75 instantly, but I don't know...
OK, so I went to Best Buy today to compare everything. The 950 is awesome! I was surprised they had working demo units - last time in, when I originally got my nook, neither the Kindle nor the Sonys at the time had working units, only changing "wallpapers" of their features. Now, everything was working, all Sonys, both nooks and the Kindle. The 950 is just about the same body size as my nook, but bigger screen. It's SO light compared to the nook, I am just imagining my hands/wrists not getting tired anymore while reading at night. Also, I love the organisational format, and the handwriting was better than expected. I was surprised that I don't even have to use the stylus to handwrite - I can just use my finger and it still writes in a small line rather than a wide streak, which is odd to see happen but I like it. And even though I was touching the screen I wasn't seeing any fingerprints, which I was worried about. So all in all, I want a 950! I will miss the nook colour cover flow though, but nothing is perfect. And, I looked at the nook colour to for the heck of it. It was awesome! Very pretty and fun. But not for me. |

Interestingly enough, I find myself unhappy with my new reader and thinking about switching to a Nook wifi instead. I feel the handwriting tool on the PRS-650 isn't as responsive as I would have hoped; my normally great handwriting looks sloppy on the screen. Notes are only useful if you can read them. I haven't tried downloading notes yet, but it strikes me that if I will be looking at them on a computer screen, it might be more useful to have typewritten notes. Plus, I don't like the steps involved in starting a note or highlight (as I understand it, on a Kindle you just start typing and it goes to "note mode"). A Nook wifi can be purchased for under $99 shipped right now, and having the ability to read nytimes and some of my favorite blogs on an eink screen sounds sweeter than what I have now... |

Are you making notes via Options > Notes > Create Edit, or just by tapping the highlight/bookmark? A lot of people start out by doing the former, which understandably takes a frustratingly long time. The latter is quicker, though perhaps not as quick as how you describe how the Kindle works (for the Sonys, any note must be attached to a bookmark or highlight, they can't exist by themselves -- are the Kindle's notes associated with the page only then?).

The Sony 650 is just a great product to me. It;s well made. Aesthetically pleasing and have a touchscreen that makes navigation so easy.

Bookmarks work the same way. Double-tap in the top-right-hand corner, then tap once the bookmark. Heh. Sorry if you already know most of this, but more detail is always better than less, I think. ![]() Last edited by viviena; 11-25-2010 at 06:24 AM. |
