I just read something out of my usual zone, "Lovers and Beloveds." It's a fantasy with a fair amount of erotic content. Very well-written.

Review here.

Just finished Dragon's ring and although I found it hard with all the names it got better and better. Very sweet and gentle dragon-story. Good book but not fantastic. Thinking of buying it in paperback and give as a Christmas present.

Finished reading Dubliners by James Joyce. I really enjoyed his skilful use of language, conjuring up believable characters so swiftly in the many memorable short stories - some better than others. Now reading The True Benjamin Franklin by Sydney George Fisher. It's wonderful having so many great free books available. To the people who made it possible ...

Well, I liked the book. Until I got to the end. It just stops. I mean — it literally just stops. No signs of the end of the book coming, go to start the next chapter and.... that's it.

Obviously of those trilogies that's really one very large book chopped into three paperback-sized chunks. Sigh...

And worse to come. The second book in the trilogy is £13.99 as a Kindle ebook. Hmm... The paperback isn't out until March 2011. Well, Feb 2011 if I order the US edition (for £3.70 on pre-order). Or I could buy the hardback 'used - like new' for £6.43 including postage.

But most likely I'll just forget about this series for two or three years. And remind myself to /always/ check that the series is complete and in paperback before starting!

Next: Something I bought when it was on offer (less than £1) back in February 2009. Use of Weapons by Iain M. Banks.

If I remember correctly, the Rainwild Chronicles consists of only 2 books: Dragon Keeper and Dragon Haven. The ending of Dragon Haven really is the ending of the story. Well, sort of

...

Too friggin' many books these days do that. Dan Simmons - Hyperion did that and I will never forgive him for allowing it to be done that way. I plan to never read any of his work again.

Oh - you're right. And I see that here is explicitly described as one manuscript that was divided into two volumes for publication.

So I'll probably only need to wait until March/April next year for the ebook to drop to a reasonable price. Thanks! I'm a lot happier.

(In the same page linked above, Robin Hobb says "The untitled book I am working on now picks up the tale of the Tarman expedition in search of Kelsingra. It’s my work in progress and threatens to be a long book!"

wish I had read your post before I bought the book today. I've started on it but so far I find the beginning slow.

I may have to give these new Hobb books a try. But I'll be honest... her Soldier's Son Trilogy left such a sour taste in my mouth that I won't be in any hurry. I thought such a turd of a main character would have to eventually improve as the series progressed -- but nope... he stayed a turd right up until the end. Loved her short story contribution to GRRM's Warriors anthology, though.

I'm currently in the middle of David Wingrove's Chung Kuo series. It gets off to a slow start, but book three was fantastic. Time will tell if it can hold my interest for eight books. I wanted to read the series before they re-release it in its expanded (Yep, expanding an eight book series) format. Fascinating stuff.

Just returned from the library with A Fire Upon the Deep and The Mysterious Affair at Styles.

I must be going through a bi-polar episode.

I finished "Inside Out" by Barry Eisler, and wow! Great ending! I gave it five stars on GoodReads. Now what to read next?
