DYAMNNN!!! this has been a hellacious storm! power finally back on after about 36 grueling below freezing hours. I MUST get the generator fixed and clean out one of the storage rooms that has a fireplace in it!

it is still a little below freezing in my room. it will take hours for everything to heat up with my little heaters. no telling when my water pipes will thaw

I got a little bit of water oout of a faucet about 2 hours after the power came back on. I'm hoping this is a good sign. I know I am going to have to go out to the well house and check things out, but I am holding out for daylight

Bloody, damn roads.

Set off for work (about 25 miles away) just over 4 hours ago and have just got home after giving up at about half way - 14 miles in over 3 and a half hours!

Motorway shut due to a lorry on fire on a different motorway, would you believe?

I'm looking forward to the day when we can all work virtually from the comfort of our homes.

That's pretty rough, but it could be worse!

Nine day traffic jam!

PS. Hope your pipes thaw soon and you get the heating going OK.

Oh, me too. I do work from home sometimes, but today I had a video conference room booked for a meeting with some German colleagues. Bloody stupid security policy at work doesn't allow me to use a web cam from my laptop for that. I'll have to dial in now, which is OK, but not the same as a video conference.

Is it worth leaving a tap on once they have thawed?

This is the first time I've come here to vent/rant.

I have 2 boys (6 & 7, soon to be 7 & 8) and for the last 3 years they've been bullied almost everyday by the same brat at recess and in the after school program. I've been to the principal so many times I can't even count anymore. I thought this year was going pretty smoothly until last night when my 8 year old son comes home and tells me that the brat is at it again! And has been all year. When I asked him why he hasn't said anything, he tells "Because they don't do anything about it".

Last night at the after school program my son (Vincent) goes to get a box of toys to play with, the brat blocks his way and pushes the box out of his hands and stands there smiling at him (I would've smacked him, but Vincent's not that type of kid). The girl that works there saw what happened and took them into the hall to talk with them (like they always do) and the kid denied everything while smirking at Vincent the whole time. Needless to say nothing was done other than speaking to him (cause that always works).

Vincent told me the other day the brat was trying to kiss one of the other boys and was humping him! He's only 6!

Both my boys have been punched, kicked, pushed, made fun of by this kid. My husband had a chat with the father last year who swore up and down that he knew nothing about his kids behaviour. When I spoke to the principal last time she said they had been "working with him" for 2 years. Good job!

So now I guess it's my turn to have a chat with the father, and I'm not so nice. I'm also going to get a hold of the school board. What happened to zero tolerance?

Vincent tripped one day (he gets that from me, we both trip on air) and fell into another kid who swore at him. Vincent was reprimanded and they sent a letter home to me, like he did it on purpose! Ridiculous.

Soooo, here's the update:

I went in to have a meeting with the principal, and who do I see when I get into the reception area? The father of the little sociopath! I almost lost my temper right there, but was able to keep my cool. The principal saw me walk in and pulled me into her office right away. She told me that the brat is being expelled today and that I don't have to worry about this kid ever again. Of course, because of privacy issues she couldn't elaborate on the details of why this was happening.

Apparently, (I found this out later by another parent that was at the school after my meeting) the brat was out on the playground and decided it would be fun to grab a handful of rocks and throw it some poor unexpecting 5 year old. Well, at least one of the rocks went into the little boys eye and cut it open. They're still not sure if he'll be able to see out of it. The brat actually stood there laughing at him, while this kid was screaming at the top of his lungs! The mother of the child was at home, which is across the street from the playground, and she heard him screaming. I can't even imagine what she must have been thinking when she got there and saw the blood running down her sons face.

When I saw the father there in the office, he was trying to convince the school not to kick out his kid. I still don't think he gets it.

All I can think about is how that could've been my boy. I'm glad it's over and this sociopath is gone, but it's not how I wanted it done. I really hope this little boy that was injured will be ok.

When I lived in New England I used to leave every tap dripping all winter long. (And that was even with having heating tapes on all the incoming line!) But that doesn't help if there is a power failure and the pump stops working. The last couple of years I lived there I used to pile hay bales all around the baseboard outside of the house.

We once on a holiday in winter.
When we came back, the waterpipes had been frozen up and thawed. The first thing we heard when we opened the door was this Niagrafalls.
Water came out of our kitchenceiling. Thaught us to block the main watertap in the cellar, the next time we went away in the winter.

KK; good luck with on powershortage and water. Must be a hell of a time not to have warm water/ warm house and the rest of it. Hang on.

I'm glad that it worked out well for your child. It's too bad that it had to take another child being injured before the school took any real action. In many ways I can understand the school's fear of taking the wrong actions, but in just as many ways I wish I could make my own laws once in a while.
