On our TV- news they showed the two miners that escaped. There's still to much dangerous gasses to undertake a rescueoperation. A small hole is being drilled to lower a camera. Nobody knows if anyone is alive.

that isn't making the news here... just checked the CNN website a few minutes ago. it's frustrating, having the example of the Chilean miners and that everything worked out ok, but knowing that historically it doesn't

I do care; it's a time zone thing. I have a friend who is half Maori, and I think mining is one of the riskiest jobs in the world, especially coal mining. We've had our share of problems in the Maritimes; got some really sad folksongs out of them.

I hope things turn out better down there.

It's pretty grim, I think. The explosion occurred at 3.45pm on Friday afternoon NZ time (about 72 hours ago). The mine is 2.5km (about 1.5 miles) long, but actually tunnels uphill into a hill, so is only about 150m below ground level.

There are 29 miners missing. Two, who were somewhat closer to the surface when the explosion occurred managed to crawl out about 1.5 hours later. Unfortunately the levels of methane and carbon monoxide are too high to send rescue teams in, as there is a huge risk of further explosions which could affect both rescuers and those who are missing. They are currently trying to drill into the tunnel to test the air where the missing may be, and also to put a camera down and see inside the tunnel. They are also sending a robot into the mine to investigate further.

Coal mining is a hugely dangerous business and all we can do is hold onto hope.

The family members and friends must be going through sheer hell.

One of the wives is heavily pregnant, and my heart really feels for her.

Let's only hope that it all ends on a positive note.

No, we have a small news item about it once a day. Nothing has changed; still too dangerous to start a big rescue operation.

Tragic news this afternoon: a second explosion in the mine. They're quite sure there were no survivors.

It seems as though there is no hope for any of the men. My partner used to work in the mines at Broken Hill and he really is glad he decided to change careers many years ago.
