Really liking 4.2.1 - pandora playing while I read, can dim the screen without having to go to setup, using folders my 10 screens of apps is now 2.
And the orientation "switch" is very easy to get to. No big deal. Lee |

I like the update. Being "big of hand" I found the rotation lock to be a little hard to use. I find the software lock is a lot easier to use. It's nice to have the folders. Backing up and synching also seems quicker but that just may be my imagination...

Very easy compared with what, certainly not the easily accessible switch you could instantly access compared with taps, swipe, tap and all so the ipad can get a switch that is basically useless for it.

I didn't even know there was going to be a major software update coming. This feature will, without doubt, trip alot of people up. |

I saw this thread bemoaning the change weeks ago. I personally don't care that much either way. As long as I can lock the screen rotation one way or the other.
Now, the ability to dim/brighten the screen from that mini-control app, I find VERY useful. All my reading apps have dimmers, but not for the web. Now all the apps can be easily dimmed. Locking the screen rotation is not some emergency type of action that it really matters to me whether I do it by a switch on the side, or by bringing up the mini-control. On the list of things that annoy me about iOS in general, this doesn't even make the top 10. How about access to the file system so that apps can share access to the same files -- so I don't have to load a pdf into each and every app I might want to use to view it. Lee |

what you missed in comprehension or whatever is that the physical switch could be a little difficult for some with larger fingertips or not so good sight or motor control. I'd think user definition for the physical switch would be the cat's meow, the software control can be easier for some, switch for others. Don't be so closed-minded.

So what are the steps to lock the orientation in the latest iPad? Also, if I want to update to the latest version of iOS, do I also need to update to the latest version of iTunes? Thanks.

Click and hold in the application list and drag your finger to the right. A new menu will appear with a variety of controls. The leftmost control is the orientation lock. You can also set brightness from here, which is a nice addition. |

can I get the film rights on your first dream?
The second unfortunately falls into the category "Science Fiction", actually in the same category as "The Phantom Menace" ![]() |

Just as a matter of interest do you really think that tap, tap, slide, tap is actually going to be that easy for somebody with not so good motor control? To me it sounds more like something that should be in a 2d beat-em-up to do a special move. Personally, I don't mind them adding the software option, it would give people more choice, the problem is that they have removed the functionality on the physical switch to replace it with something that is fine on a phone, but bloody useless for most people on an ipad. |

If you jailbreak, there is a program called NoMute available on Cydia that will revert the button back to the Orientation lock.
Edit: It seems for this version at least when you turn on the lock it also mutes. Basically the button does both things. Maybe that can be fixed. Last edited by tyche; 11-25-2010 at 09:28 AM. |

I've never understood what's the big deal with the change of the orientation lock switch with iOS 4.2. As my iPad is in a case, I very rarely have to use this feature anyway.
..And in case I have do to use it, I personally much prefer to be able to turn it on from the iPad screen as the switch was always very hard to find (especially in dark, at night when I started to read with my iPad), could never remember where it was. |
