@ihab7000: AFAIK, only LTR (Left-To-Right) scripts are supported (ie. LGC [Latin, Greek, Cyrillic] & CJK as LTR [Chinese, Japanese, Korean]).
AFAIK, Arabic is RTL and completely unusable as LTR, so, no, not doable within the official framework. As I said, the *browser* should *theoretically* handle RTL scripts, since it's using a proper layout engine (pango). But the rest of the framework, and the reader, don't. So, unless you develop a standalone reader app with a proper layout engine, forget about it. Last edited by NiLuJe; 11-17-2010 at 04:26 PM. |

Okay thanks. I read the readme.txt file, but did not read the readme_install.txt file! Thank you! I very much appreciate this new mod because the screensaver has always been just a little too quick to trigger on me.
By the way, I'd just like to thank you and the other developers for what you've done here. It's really helped me out. I've created this tutorial with screenshots for a few of the hacks. If you have the time, perhaps you could gloss over it and tell me if anything is wrong. http://goo.gl/LetPi Last edited by kranu; 11-19-2010 at 12:43 AM. |

@ihab7000: Putting Arabic fonts would be pretty much useless, I just said (twice now) that I'm pretty sure the software doesn't handle Arabic script layout. You'll have Arabic glyphs, sure, but in the wrong order (LTR).

CJK.ttf, Chinese characters, and Latin diacritics
I've used CJK.ttf to overwrite Serif_Bold.ttf, Serif_BoldItalic.ttf, Serif_Italic.ttf, and Serif_Regular.ttf on a DXG, following the instructions in a reply posted here. Chinese characters now display ok without a hitch, but it seems that CJK.ttf doesn't support Latin diacritics very well. Acute and grave accents (à ì é and the like) in one book look ok, but umlauts (ä ö ü etc.) in another appear as blank boxes. The fonts used in these two books seem to be different though. I've attached screenshots of the two books in question.

@vyiciu: Yeah, Droid Fallback doesn't have the same range of latin glyphs than the standard droid Sans/Serif (There might be a tweaked Droid Fallback with more diatrics lurking around here, though, check the attachments of this thread).
Your second book probably is a Topaz book, which would explain the font. |

I think I've found a solution that more or less suits my needs, although I'm not sure if this a valid solution. I only need a Chinese font to read the occasional webpage or email; I don't need to type Chinese (so I don't need the full-blown Duokan, which in any case does not have internet access when in the Duokan system), and all the Chinese books I need to read are my own image-based pdf scans. I've replaced Serif_Regular.ttf with Arial Unicode MS.ttf, and Serif_Bold.ttf with LiHei Pro.ttf, both pulled from the fonts on my Mac. Now the browser can display Chinese in both regular and bold fonts (LiHei is quite a bold one, and italics in Chinese are relatively rare), without sacrificing the diacritics and italic fonts in my .azw and .mobi format ebooks. However, I'm not sure if there might be any licensing issues involved with these fonts.

Thx again dear NiluJe,
Concerning the RTL ,I understand it now. Could you plz tell me the advantages of the Jailbreaking process(I know it will not make it read RTL) Does it make it more faster, add fonts, screen savers..?!What else And,most important:AFTER JAILBREAKING,will my Kindle be able to update from Amazon,The latest firmaware or not: As usual I am waiting your answer to Jailbreak it because have read your wonderful explanation about that issue and I downloaded all the files attached. Again could you plz inform me of the software that converts to AWZ. or kindle formate. What is the best program that does so ![]() |

@vyiciu: So long as you don't redistribute them, don't worry about the fonts
![]() @ihab7000: It's a jailbreak, it's sole purpose is allowing custom update packages to be installed. It won't hamper in any way with official updates. Calibre/Kindlegen/MobiPocket Creator. |

Dear NiLuJe ,
I did the jailbreak on your way.It is really fantastic . I have 3 enquiries 1.In the linkss there is a backup folder that contains two folders the pics(600x800) and(824x1200) They are together 7 megas. Will there be any problem if I removed one of them(wich one would be better?!) to the screensavers folder and delete the all of the ""backup"" folder to save space. 2.During the sleep mood the pic does not change it remains fixed..Is that normal? I did not notice if they change before the hack process, but everytime I go into the sleep mood it gives a diff pic ,still it remains stable. Is there a way to make them change during the sleep mood?! 3.Can I do the sme thing in the fonts""backup"" folder in the linkfont folder. It has the same fonts in the in the ""font folder"" so can I delete the ""backup"" folder to save space. Thx in Advance |

The images do not change while the kindle is sleeping nor did they change under the original software/firmware. They only change to the next image, the next time the kindle goes to sleep.
The "screen saver" mode is not the old traditional one where the images kept changing to avoid burning an image in the monitor. The image only shows that the unit is "sleeping" as opposed to be fully off. |

@ihab7000: You can remove the backup folders, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's not like we're gonna be missing those ~15MB. If you *really* want to remove them, at least keep them somewhere on your computer.
