Thanks for the feedback on Perdido Street Station! I've had it on my reader for a while now, I think it's time to finally read it.

Certain aspects of the book are certainly depressing, but the story dynamic and Styron's language move the novel forward. I especially enjoy the interaction of the characters and Styron's ability at characterization, which goes very deep. The novel is dense with language, yes - in a way that I enjoy. Styron exposes his characters and shows you their hypocrisies, horrors, failings. The human heart is on display. I would recommend that one check out the customer reviews of this book to see if it's something that you would like to read; or, perhaps try Styron's first novel, "Lie Down in Darkness," which has been described as very Faulkneresque. Not reading anything at the moment, since I'm too busy messing with me and my girlfriends new apartment...
![]() But I'm listening to Dragonlance Preludes 2: Kendermore on audiobook while I work. |

Next up were a couple of books by Lawrence Watt-Evans that I bought in one of fictionwise's recent 50% off sales: The Cyborg and the Sorcerers and The Wizard and the War Machine fun, but lightweight - quick, easy reads. And I'm currently reading a completely different kettle of fish (bought in the same sale): Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang I'm half-way through, and it's a brilliant collection of stories. To give you an idea: the first is the story of the Tower of Babel... but Spoiler:
And there's "Division by Zero" which explores the consequences of a mathematical proof, and the title story, "Story of Your Life", which is a fascinating and touching look at free-will and predestination. Highly recommended. Also available at Amazon US and no doubt elsewhere, but DRM-free and (if in a sale) cheapest at Fictionwise. |

Thanks for recommending this book. ![]() I wasn't aware of it, so I went to Amazon and read the reviews, which were very enthusiastic. This appears to be actual LITERARY horror novel, so I purchased it. Now, instead of 24 books in my "To Be Read" category, I have 25. That still leaves me with over 600 other titles, in various categories, to read - but they'll have to wait. Don |

It's been getting good reviews for some time now on the genre blogs so I imagine it's only a matter of time before it gains some more mainstream press. |

I'm halfway through Dragon's ring and although I found it a bit confusing to begin with I'm starting to like it. There's a lot of complex names to remember and I'm not an avid fantasy reader so some of the jargon is unfamiliar to me. But all in all it's not a bad book.

I just finished "Half Past Dead" by Bianca D'Arc and Zoe Archer, which was a freebie a little while ago. Now I'm trying to decide if I want to read "How to Treat a Lady" by Karen Hawkins (mass market, just read the first two in her Talisman series), "Rebel" by Zoe Archer (kindle freebie), or "Death at the Priory" by James Ruddick, which I got at the library.

I just finished reading our very own KC May's "The Venom of Vipers." You'll have to keep your eyes peeled for the review, which will coincide with her release of the book December 1st!
