Princess Catherine of ???

I've read a few very confusing articles about what Kate Middleton’s official title will be after she marries Prince William. I’ve seen everything from "Catherine, Princess of Wales", to "Kate, Duchess of Clarence, Cambridge and/or Sussex"; and frankly I’m as confused as ever. The only thing that seems at all consistent is that she will be "Her Royal Highness". So I thought, “Hey, I have a lot of British friends on MR, why not ask them?” So I’m asking. |

She will simply be "Princess Catherine"; no "of" anywhere . If and when Charles becomes King, William will probably become Prince of Wales (although this is not automatic), and Catherine would become Princess of Wales, as well as acquiring various lesser titles, such as Duchess of Cornwall. And has it been resolved yet what the current Duchess of Cornwall will be called when/if her husband becomes king?

It actually wouldn't surprise me if Charles did not become King, and the throne passed directly to William.

I've been around for the marriage of the present Queen Elizabeth. Since then, there have been five (first) marriages in the family, four of which have ended in tears. Given those odds against this one lasting, who cares a damn? Neil

She would be Queen Catherine, yes. The wife of a reigning King is a Queen, but the husband of a reigning Queen is merely a Prince. The husband or wife has absolutely no legal "power" and does not inherit the throne when their spouse dies.

As an ardent Royalist, I do care . Kate will probably be the mother of the future King or Queen of the United Kingdom.

I recall Elizabeth's mother being called the "Queen Mother" until she died, even though she was not married to a King.

I thought that Camilla agreed not to be the queen when she and Charles got permission to marry. But I also read that some felt that they didn't have the power to negotiate such a deal, and that she would be queen whether she liked it or not. Harry, why do you think that William might succeed Elizabeth? |
