Exactly correct

They make a loss or near loss on the Kindle to attract customers and their walled garden approach means they will sell ebooks to those customers without those new customers shopping around.

My mother killed her kobo by dropping it on the floor (hardwood). She was walking to the kitchen to get a drink and turned around to say something to me and it dropped out of her hand. The screen was stuck at a page turn I believe. Couldn't turn it off. Reset didn't work.

They gave her a new one; I don't know what she told them at the store.

Wow, I've dropped mine a few times now. A couple days ago I turned around to grab the phone and forgot my reader was in my hand. It flew across the room and landed on the hardwood floor about 6 feet away, luckily it was unscathed.
