That's okay, when we all gather at your place after the huge world disaster, we'll pass the hat. After all, it will be OUR well too...

Seriously, sorry about the new expense.

Sorry to hear about this. While there are home problems that can be put off, dealing with water isn't one of them. Plus it's usually one that we can't fix ourselves so have to lay out even more money. We'll all pray for a cheap fix.

I feel your pain. Two weeks ago we spent a weekend without running water (except for the garden hose that we ran from the neighbor's outside faucet to our deck) because the pressure switch went out and the pump continued to run until it built up enough pressure to break a pipe (late Friday afternoon, of course). We lucked out and got by relatively cheaply (as pump problems go), only about $400 - and that was painful enough.

we don't have a neighbor close enough to run a hose from. and it was the pressure switch that was replaced for me also. just more problems than that

Ouch, that hurts! That is one of the things I hate about home ownership, a the little things that go wrong that just seem to happen at the worst time.

Oh frabjous joy!!!

Actually, let me rephrase that @***### bl**dy virus'.

My lap top has somehow acquired a virus by the name of 'Security Tool' which I did not download, as I had heard about it a week ago on TV, but will it let me get into any program to kill it? Not bl**dy likely! It is all pervasive, so I'm venting on my desktop computer.

Went into Windows and there are nineteen pages of people trying to get rid of it.

Be afraid; be very, very afraid.

According to techjaws.com/how-to-remove-security-tool-virus/

If you have malwarebytes loaded, it will remove that particular virus.

I use it weekly......free, of course. Be sure to do an "update" each time you use it......

If you have all your software installation disks and your files backed up I'd suggest just wiping and re-installing the laptop.

I hate those farking trojans with a passion, not least because they take so sodding long to clean up properly. At work if someone manages to get one of those, we just rebuild the laptop - far quicker.

Is this by any chance something that promotes itself by what appears to be a Microsoft Security Essentials alert, pointing you to a website to download to a tool to delete a detected threat?

If so, very bad indeed. It bit a writer friend, and I spent part of a weekend retrieving her manuscript in process and her My Documents folder.

She apparently picked up a rootkit, and none of the tools I had would find or remove it.

She wound up getting a new machine. (She planned to anyway, just not right now.) I probably could have resurrected the old one, once I understood what I was dealing with, but she decided now was the time to upgrade, so I assisted in the process.

Going over for dinner now, as it happens, to restore things from backups to CD I created.

Fun.

That's my route too. I don't keep ANY files on my C drive other than system and program files. Everything else is stored on other drives. If/when something happens to cause serious problems to my computer, I just re-format the C drive, and re-install the OS and applications. I keep a regular backup of my application data files so all it takes is a quick overwrite after installation to put me right back to a clean computer. Less than 2-3 hours, most of that being waiting time as things load.

Here we have a standard image for each type of machine in the enterprise. It's a simple matter to just ghost the image, run sysprep or ghostwalker or sumsuch to change the SID, rejoin the network, and install any patches that were issued since the image was burned.

The problem comes if the user has not backed up his/her data.
