Just poking my head in to say that Anthony Trollope's skewering of the nouveaux riche(s) of his day is as applicable now as it was when his work first appreared.

I'm preferring to go with a modern classics in this case. That means books that are already classic or destined to become classics. I'm not going based on age. Age just makes them old. Old does not make a book a classic.

Books like A Passage to India are considered classics and yet are awful awful books. So no, age is irrelevant as to what a classic is.

It is interesting to see what respondents consider a "classic".

I consider "Mr Midshipman easy" by Captain Marryat (1836) as an important book too, but it is less of a classic to me than, say, Fellowship of the Ring".
I think you are right - a book published tomorrow might be a classic immediately. To me, a classic is a book that transcends its time & place of publication, and repays rereading not merely in one's enjoyment, but in becoming a better book because the reader has grown.

I love HG Well's War of the Worlds, which I'll re-read again soon. But there are some great suggestions here I think I need to download.

I am definitely going to give The Count of Monte Cristo a go off the back of the recommendations on this thread.

For me - I have a lot of fondness for The Stars my Destination, Siddhartha, Dracula and Sherlock Holmes, Moonfleet as I read them just before I became a teenager.

A recent classic I've enjoyed was "Treasure Island" - well worth giving a go if you want read like a pirate.
