"Widespread adoption of asphalt or concrete roads in the United States" doesn't fit the list, though.

![]() Concrete roads are a rarity here. By profession I am a Civil Engineer, I design roads for a living ![]() 1870 was about the magic year for the US and Australia. they were designed using the methodology of John Macadam, simply surfacing over the original but reworked gravel surface with bitumen. By definition a paved surface does also include gravels or stone surfaces. Oh, and to get back on topic. I blame Buffy and Angel for the earliest romanticist notion of Twilight style vampires. |

I haven't actually read any of the Twilight books myself, but I think the 'craze' for such books is the result of the copycat syndrome. That is a book like Harry Potter or Twilight makes it big in publishing and everyone tries to come up with a similar but different concept to hopefully collect some crumbs from the "big books" wake. You see similar things when a movie comes out too. First the movie is released then the merchandise associated with the movie or its central character is released. Toys, coloring books, lunch boxes etc.

Well if gets the young people reading then I can't really complain, thankfully they are now so prolific that they get there own shelf in book shops so I don't have to browse through them.
I'd recommend 'Twelve' by Jasper Kent for a dose of proper, nasty vampires. There is a follow up too which I've not yet managed to read. |

Woldwalker, why he falls for her was the first and worst of several cognitive dissonances in that series. When I asked the several people who recommended it, all women if it matters, they seem to accept Edward swooning over Bella because it is love. And love conquers all, yadda yadda. Clearly I missed that train... Oh, I enjoyed the series well enough (say 3 of 5 stars) but I never found Bella to be attractive myself. Too indecisive (the Jacob vs Edward drama made me yell at the book). Perhaps that's fine for YA heroines, so some readers identify with her.

One of the things I liked with twilight was the "vampire revisited" aspect.
Then, when you use the same thing all over again, it lost its charms. |

On an adult note I found the Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake books unrealistic as well with regards to fidelity. The later ones where Anita has a huge harem of men following her around who are all straight and yet don’t mind being naked in a room with a bunch of other guys and forsake all other relationships for the honor of sharing her with the Seventh Fleet. ![]() |

I'm tired of vampires... period. The oh-so-obvious theme of the good and vulnerable human trying to use love to "save" the vampire, essentially an immortal serial killer, was passe decades ago.
Can we please move on to robots, or ghosts, or something? |
