Any way to read a Borders ebook on my Kindle?
Hi, I just bought a Kindle 3, and was surfing around to find a book I wanted, it was cheaper on Borders.com.au than Amazon, so I bought it. Turns out I could only access it by downloading their ebook reader for mac. Now I a) can't find the darned book anywhere on my computer and b) don't know how to get it on my Kindle... HELP?!?!
I'm organising all of my ebooks on Callibre and would be annoyed if I've just shelled out money for something that is going to be forcing me to read it on my Mac. (Running Max OS 10.6.5 Snow Leopard - and I live in Australia, in case that makes a difference) |

I don't know for sure but don't Borders just sell epubs, and those epubs are DRM'd?
If it was an epub you bought you won't be able to read the book (once you find it that is) without stripping the DRM first and then converting it to a MOBI in Calibre. You would need to google for instructions on how to remove DRM, it's not something I do. To be honest you should have bought the book from Amazon. The only books you can buy from anyone other than Amazon are non DRM books, ideally in a MOBI format, although you can convert any non DRM books to MOBI using Calibre |

I know that I have comprehension issues with written instructions but this is getting ridiculous.
I know now to stick to amazon or non-DRM ebooks, but as for the one I've already bought??? I've spent the last four hours trying to remove the DRM on this ONE book. I don't intend to ever do it again, and I'm exhausted and cranky and upset that it won't bloody work. ![]() I don't know how to do it. I've tried googling it and tried to follow the instructions but I just don't get it. I've gotten it to .epub format, but it's getting rid of the DRM that stumps me. ![]() I think I shall go to bed and cry myself to sleep and try again in the morning. ![]() ![]() |

I understand your frustration but if it were me I would chalk this one up to experience and forget about it. Seriously not worth getting stressed about - luckily it's just one book and you didn't purchase a whole load.
I'm sure you'll feel better after a good sleep. It is possible to remove the drm from ePub books but not something I do but perhaps someone else might point you in the right direction. |

You would need to strip the DRM from the ePub, fix the margins so there are none (so the left margin bug doesn't bite you) and then convert to Mobipocket using Calibre.

May I include a scenario.
Pretend that you're talking to someone with NO programming experience. She's good at using computers, but fiddling behind the scenes is slightly terrifying. Then pretend that she also has a Learning Difficulty where written language is like a second language to her. That's me. So if you could give me step by step instructions, I'd really really appreciate it. eg. 1. Download Python (which I've done) 2. This is where I'm stuck, what program to I open, how do I create the script thingy, what do I include in the script and what do I exclude? How do I run it? 3. Open in Calibre 4. Throw a party and get drunk because you've finally done it! Please feel free to re-write step 2, elaborate and treat me like a complete idiot. I don't mind!!! |

No one on this forum will provide instruction on how to do it. It's illegal and this forum won't allow that type of thread.
If that book is available on Amazon I would just buy it again. It's not worth the frustration. |

Ok.
Sorry - didn't mean to cause any problems. I'll just do without. I can't afford to buy another copy. After just buying the Kindle and case for it, buying the extra books was a treat. Never mind. Thanks for your patience. |

Keep googling, some blogs out there have instructions. You just need to keep looking, maybe someone will post some hints of where to look. If anyone posts anything specific this thread will get closed and then no one can help you
It's a sad mistake to make but at least it was just one book. Why don't you look for some free books to download to read on your kindle for now. Amazon has quite a few |

Thanks heaps.
I'm fine. It's 2 am, I'm giving up and going to sleep. Thanks for helping and explaining the rules. I'm sure I'll be fine. I just need some sleep and maybe the world will make sense again. ![]() |

Apprentice Alf's Blog is a good source for info on DRM. It has been a long road to make DRM removal easy to use (because programming these scripts is illegal in the US, for example), but the tools_v2.1 bundle is much easier to use than the early days of DRM removal.
I suggest using Calibre (since you will need to convert from ePub to MOBI anyway) and the DRM-removal Calibre plug-ins, e.g. from tools_v2.1. These do not require a command line or a separate install of Python, because Calibre has a GUI and has a subset of python compiled in. Once the plug-in is working, DRM-ridden ebooks are just as easy to use in Calibre as DRM-free. |

My view is that if I've made every effort to do the right thing, which I have. If I'm still being screwed over, anything else that follows is perfectly moral, if not always legal.
I don't know if I should say this, but all is well with the book now. I'm happy. :THANKS: |
