AFAICT, the Windows RNDIS Linux Eth Gadget drivers are bundled with duokan in one of the folder (in the initial archive, not on the Kindle). (It should work out of the box on Linux/OS X, though).

Thanks! Windows took that driver. Connection still times out, though. But it is there.

Update/install is simple:

I realize that there is another folder (duokan\DK_System\DK_Update), do not worry about this, the install script takes care of it and copies over your device specific files (k2/k3/dx/dxg), you'll need the whole dk_system folder, and not just the one in the dk_update folder. If that is what you were talking about.

that's all you need to do for an update, reboot your kindle and update will complete.

For a new install, you will need to go into 升级包, select the bin file that corresponds to your model, and place that in the root directory of your kindle, along with the 3 other DK_ folders and go to settings, update kindle, but this is only if you have never installed it before.

Anyways, still not able to register on their forums. Still no word for an uninstall. Does anyone know if this will conflict with future AZ updates? I assume that when trouble arises a workaround will be made at that point, but still =X

This is a problem with character encodings...
This happens often when you try to display text of one specific encoding (say you don't know the encoding because it is not specified in the file) with another encoding. You will get this type of display. The kindle viewer does the same thing if you have a mobi encoded improperly it will give you the oversized characters with accents, or it will omit certain characters that are not in the encoding set, or it will simply show a ? with a box around it.

The problem here is that they are not reading the character encoding from the file. Here is a better explanation:

Say your document has the word "Papier-mâché"
é = character 233
â = character 226

the â is a special character found only in specific encodings, specifially ISO 8859-1 or 8859-2. The é is a more common european character found in more sets, such as the default set 8859, which I assume duokan is using. If you open a document in duokan with this word, i assume you will see something like this:

papier-m ch é

I did finally get the USB network connected to the bookstores. As you said, Duck, just a list of books in Chinese for sale. I imagined that I might actually have a primitive browser, and be able to go elsewhere. Of course, that is kind of stupid, because it is plugged into my computer, which can take me anywhere I want to go much more easily.

@curstpriest. Thanks for the info on the fonts. Is there are was to change character encoding in Duokan? Though I'm not sure why I even care, because I read in English, and, if I want to read something in French, it works fine in Kindle, with a very nice French-English translation dictionary. It is just hard to resist mucking around. I'm lucky I haven't bricked the fugger.

I did enter a bug-report, with direction to this forum, explaining our situation. So, they are aware of us. However, this weekend update causes major activity, everyone ask for help, and there may not be that many bug-trackers around. When the issues have been documented well, then they are reported upward in a 'chain of command' fashion, I assume. I don't think our problems are considered something of high priority. It is more cosmetic then serious. ( well, this is only my opinion and understanding of it )

My install failed - as it seem that I cannot get any other language then Chinese. Not sure if they have tested the DX models earlier. But when such things happens, it may take time to fix the broken parts. But we will get there.

As for your login - then you have to do the login in Chinese
Now, how can you do that ? You can use google to translate, so you know what the questions on those forms are all about. But you cannot have google up when you create your nick, profile or any other things. Inside, you cannot use it either. But if you don't try to sign in as Osama Bin Laden or who else they may have blacklisted, I guess they will welcome you. Just beam some of those hearts at them

All I know is that that they are aware they got some trouble - there are some sort of conflicts with Asian, and I am unsure about the text-to-speech, which is some constraint. But they obviously work on it. And we may help them where we can.

NOPE - I do agree of course, I want thing in English, but let see if we can give them some feedback and correction on the language settings, and so on. ( maybe our words/ideas got crossed ? )

A browser is no big problem. But Duokan will not cause trouble for Amazon and neither should we. If we run it through our own networks, then it is fine.

Some of those stores may not be of particular interest to us now.

But here is some idea:

You have Bookstores at the top - and we can of course alter the list and put in something else. But the next entry is for RSS, and guess what - mobileread.com have that ! How neat would that be, huh !

BTW - NiLuJe screensaver just came up on the DX, announcing hack was successfully. And it sure did wait awful long before it came up, so ? - does his "timeout" work under Duokan as well ? Please, please - let it be so

Bugs:

Not many left

Tiny text settings, like "Default reboot to DK" ( to instead of by ) - It is likely that a few
things got a bit messed up during install. It did report an error and would not boot up.
Else, I did cause some - or not sure why that book did not get copied correctly and turned up black.

It is somewhat strange when refreshing a page. It is like it initially render it with an "ink-black-level" darker then perhaps the settings say. And there is like a reverse brush-stroke wiping it lighter ?

There seem to be a new feature ? ( see attached screen-shot ) Under System settings,
there is a J. Word capture time setting ?

( There were some rumour about the text2speech synthesis, that it also could record sound commands? Could anything like that be possible ? I played with some command system for astronomical telescope that actually had some options for such. Think it was a possible future
feature. Oooppss... maybe it is stroke captures under Chinese Wubi ? Need to ask someone )

@FethryDuck: Unless they alter/kill the power management daemon, it should be taken into account on Duokan too, yes. (And that's in seconds, so 3600/60^2 = 1h yep).

You are awesome - real nice ! I would hope to get into the DK system too, ssh over .. and this is the bad part. There is no Wifi or bluetooth else, this had of course been a grand model. But perhaps I may do some hack
