Also purchased my PRS 505 from B & H. Ordered on Tuesday and arrived in Brisbane (Australia) on Friday. Excellent service and I didn't have to pay any GST, Duty or additional handling charges.

Recently got a PRS-505 in Canada, from B&H, and I was surprised to see the following on the back of the device:

Quote:
This Class B digital apparatus complies with Canadian ICES-003.
Same thing in French right below it.

Is that a sign that they're planning to sell it in Canada?

So am i right in assuming that once i get this(im in Australia), i just register with connect ebooks, tick the "I Live in America" box," and i get the free credit? I dont need to put in addreses or anything like that?

But i can use my credit card to buy books in future?

Hi Urseus

You can indeed register connect and get your free credit by clicking on the 'I live in the US' box.
You can only purchase books from Sony's connect store with an US credit card, there is currently no way around this for Credit card purchasers.

however it is possible to purchase Sony Connect gift certificates(again ifyou have a US card!) so if you know someone in the US who could buy a gift card for you you could then use that to purchase from the store.
also a guy on here called leaping gnome offers to buy a gift card and mail you the details if you paypal him the money, seems a lot of people have used his 'service' and are very happy with him.

Thanks for your reply.

What does that mean exactly "america credit card". Is that just a card registered in America?

The Sony store is not the only place for books though is it. I can use the other methods outlined on this forum for books, those free download places and such.

What is the difference between me using that "Project (something)" downloads and the sony books?

"Project Gutenberg" is working on producing electronic copies of out-of-copyright works. They have 10,000+ books done (so far) and more appearing daily. Because of the "out-of-copyright" requirement, most of this content predates 1923 (I may not have the date right, but somewhere in the 1920s). Project Gutenberg (also known as PG) is the source of most of the downloads that you can find here at Mobileread. The ones here have generally been more carefully formatted than the "classics" at Sony (most of which also come from PG!). Otherwise, the difference is that you have to download PG books with your browser, and then load them onto the Reader either through Sony's library software, through libprs500 (if that's what you use), via a memory card, or (if you have a prs505) directly onto the reader via USB. The Sony "classic" books, by comparison, must be purchased from Sony, managed through the Sony library software, and are DRM locked to your reader (the ones from PG and Mobileread are DRM-free).

The difference between PG from Sony and PG from this web site? Is that your question? This site is consistently much better.

Hi,

I have what is hopefully not a dumb question, as I couldn't find anything about it in the operation guide. What is the significance of the small letter M or S just to the right of the battery indicator?

That's your current magnification level. S is default/normal, M is bigger, L is even bigger. I think each zoom level adds 2 pt to font sizes.

It may only show those icons after you press magnify once for a book.

First off, just wanted to say Hi to everyone. After reading this thread I went ahead and purchased a Sony PRS-505 from B&H. Got to me here in Australia in 5 days... I was most impressed. Not taxes to pay on it so it was mega awesome.

I'm _loving_ the reader. I should be a salesman for Sony because (I work at an ISP) I have inspired geek envy in half my company and a group are getting together on Monday to buy 10 of them! (one guy is getting 2, one for him and one for his partner.)

Anyway. Just wanted to say "Hi" but also add to the above post by saying that the purchase of gift certs for yourself via the Sony connect software works fine and dandy. Find a US address and just add your credit card with that address as the address. It works! I was as surprised as the next person (I used my parents address in the US since they conveniently live there, but with an AU credit card number). You can't buy books direct but you can buy gift certs sent to your own e-mail address no problem. Go Figure.

Been getting books all day! Enjoy reading everyone!

It didn't work for me. I entered a friend's US address with my UK credit card number and they instantly sussed that the two didn't match up.

Edit:

I just tried again with a different card, and it worked. I'm stunned. Both are Mastercards, but the one I tried first is registered with Verisign, so perhaps that's why it didn't work when the two addresses were different. Excellent! I'm off shopping.
