Amazon Defends Pedophile Book

Saw this today in USATODAY

I'm all for not having censorship, but this crosses the line of common decency. Amazon CS will here from me on this. Not selling this book is not censorship, just being a responsible vendor.

Amazon is a private company, so it's not censorship for them to pull any book for any reason.

As long as it's legal to sell such works, the morality of such sales is in the eye of the beholder.

The book appalls me. Then again, so do certain other books best discussed down in the "politics and religion" forum, and those concepts have, sad to say, probably caused a great deal more damage over the years than this fool's book (pedophilia, while reprehensible, doesn't generally start wars). How far should one go in demanding that a bookseller not sell a book?

And when we get there, with the publishers -- by law or by choice -- only selling "safe" books -- is that really where we want to be?

You both are right of course..I just didnt know Amazon took the highter ground by defending the publisher and not the book...Was all the same to me...

We're talking a book that promotes sexual penetration of babies and children.

By an adult male.

And THEN suggests a light sentence for perpetrators.

If you aren't outraged by this......if you can't see the difference between something that "offends" and something that is totally unacceptable, you are part of the problem.

This is not a First Amendment or censorship issue. No government body ordered Amazon not to sell the book, or questioned Amazon's right to sell it. (FYI, this was a self-published book that apparently was published through the Amazon company CreateSpace.) But consumers have a right to judge Amazon by its sale of such a book, and that's what happened.

From a business standpoint, they made the right decision. I'd rather not do business with a company that sells a book guiding people through the act of having sex with children, and then profits from those sales.

Sidenote: I'm a former teacher who gave students extra credit to read banned books and I'm also a writer whose columns have exposed local politicians advocating censorship in schools and libraries.

Two different issues, in my opinion.
