I am searching for a children's book:
It was about a witch, that had 2 or 3 bad sisters or neighbors - also witches. They were not supposed to do magic on a certain day of the week, but the witch does, anyway. There was also something about Valpurgis, some sort of witch holiday. And she had a broom she could fly on ![]() |

Reminds me of Alan Weisman's The World Without Us, but it's non-fiction and only published maybe 3 years ago...

Years ago, I read a book by Daniel Pennac that mentioned a fictional character from an American crime writer. The only thing I'm sure about is that this man had a tapeworm, which is a little weird. He was, I think, a private detective in New York.
Does this ring any bell? |

The only thing I can think of is Filth by the guy who wrote Trainspotting, but that had a Scottish detective.

I don't think this Scottish detective is it, he doesn't sound anything like the description I remember, and I'm pretty sure the one I'm looking for was American. |

How about The Isaac Quartet by Jerome Charyn?
http://hammerbooks.org/bookcharyn2.html The haunting enigma of the Quartet is Manfred "Blue Eyes" Coen, adjutant of Isaac Sidel, the fiercest cop on the street. Coen is killed in the middle of a ping-pong match, and though Isaac didn't really set him up, he gave Coen a little shove toward eternity. Isaac's errant daughter, Marilyn the Wild, was in love with Coen, and Sidel couldn't control his jealousy. But he's punished very quickly; the Guzmanns have infected him with a tapeworm, and this tapeworm unravels Isaac's conscience, makes him constantly dream of Coen. |

The book I am looking for is a science fiction book and I think it is part of a trilogy. I'm quite sure it was written by a woman, and I think she was a biologist.
The story is set on Earth, or an Earth-like planet, though the people have some sort of tentacles in their wrists, and they intertwine them with each other, which is like making love. The main characters -- a man and a woman -- feel an overpowering attraction for each other, though for some reason they need to avoid actually mating (I think). Anyway, its ten or twenty years since I read this novel and I'd like to know what it was. Possibly read it again, or the trilogy, if I am right about that. |
