If you have a Sony reader, it is true. You don't need the Sony software to use the reader generally (I got along just fine with Calibre or simple drag-and-drop). But if you want to check out library books you need to have Overdrive, the Sony software, *and* ADE installed. But in use you only need to open and use the ADE--everything else is in the background.

'Planet Obesity' by Egger & Swinbourne.

I can read the copy that was put on by the Reader Library software. It has ADE built in.

Lesson learned.

Now I have to see what happens after 7 days. Will it disappear? Or will it just revert to the non-smoking version?

You mentioned wondering if the book would disappear after 7 days. I have the Sony 505 and the 600. Both will keep the Overdrive Library ePub books on them and readable as long as I have changed the Sony date back to 2009. Mine have four books on each one that have been there a couple of months and will open for reading with no problems. The books should stay there as long as I don't hook the Sony back up to Adobe Digital Editions or the Reader Store.

At the moment I have a little used Sony Pocket Reader 300 sitting here that is being given as a Christmas gift and I have been testing it out on the Overdrive ePub books. I have tried changing dates on it, but the books go ahead and expire when the expiration date is reached. I am now trying the method where you just keep the book open to see if it can be finished past the expiration date as long as it isn't hooked back up to Sony Reader Store or Adobe Digital Editions. I can do this on the nook reader and am hoping not closing the book can also be used on the little Sony 300.

It takes ages to put a book on using the Sony software. It must be telling the reader tales about expiry dates and all that DRM crap.
Just to make sure: You don't have to "sync" your books.
This really takes awfully long, as the entire library is checked.
You just can drag and drop the single book you intend to read. This should be as fast as calibre.

Dragging and dropping should take a minute or so, at most, per book.
