@tat2man45: Like daffy4u said, check the wiki. (You'll have to at least put the custom folders back after a factory reset, so, yeah, follow the wiki).
@warl0rd: Yep, no idea why some K3 choke on a few fonts... can't reproduce this on mine ;/. And, yeah, *never* restart your Kindle with a custom .bin, at best it won't work, at worst it'll do BadThings. |

Changing fonts WITHIN a book?
I just performed the font hack on my Kindle 3, because I have a book I bought from the Kindle store whose font is very bad (some letters are cut up, eg. the narrowest parts of the lines disappear). It's clearly not one of the default fonts, but I want to be able to read this book, since I paid for it. So, I installed the font hack, but how do I change the default fonts in a given book? That's what I want to know, but none of the documentation I've seen on this hack actually says how to do that, though there are pictures that indicate that it must be possible. I would have thought that the Aa menu would be the place to do this, but it's not.
I can see that the fonts in the menus have changed, but who cares about the fonts in the menus? The only ones that matter are the ones in the books. There's an extremely vague statement in the docs about "copying the fonts you want to the linkfonts/fonts directory" but what fonts? And from where? Since the font hack install file clearly changes the default menu fonts, it's clearly installing new fonts--so what are these other "new fonts" that the docs say you should copy over yourself? How do you select fonts on a "per book" basis? Can you? And how do I apply the font I want to a book that seems to ship with nonstandard fonts? |

@KarlSchroeder: You must be referring to a Topaz book. There is absolutely no way to change the font(s) of these books without external format-shifting. (And I wouldn't really recommend doing this, given the nature of the Topaz format, it's slightly more tedious to do than usual, and you'll likely end up with something worse unless you know what you're doing/how to fix it).
Fortunately, only a handful of books are provided by Amazon in this (potentially horrible) format. |

On a sidenote, here's a potential good news for those with fussy K3 & fonts:
I'm working on another slightly crazy idea that may help with this ![]() |

Hi everyone
Just successfully applied the jb and font hack by NiLuJe --great work! Now comes a question: Can I restore some of the default fonts? For example I'd like to keep the original fonts for the Menu and browser. Where can I locate the default fonts to replace the ones in the linkfonts folder?? Thanks heaps! |

@bartveld: Basically, by overriding the FreeType lib used by the Kindle with a custom one, built from a very recent FT snapshot. Turns out Amazon uses an oooooooooold version of FT that's probably patched all to hell (No way to verify that, unfortunately, as it's not part of the source code packages ;/).
Hopefully that'll help with those K3, but the issue may lie elsewhere, so we'll see... @ryeungo: They're backed up in linkfonts/backups. Caecilia is the Serif family (books), and Helvetica the Sans family (menu). Note that on a K3, by default, the hack doesn't touch the browser fonts. |

@ryeungo: You'll have to rename them to follow the usual naming scheme, but, after that, yeah, that's it.

And here we go for a big bunches of updates!
Bump ScreenSavers to v0.16.N! * Updated sort binary (updated coreutils & TC) * Same few fixes as the fonts hack (update trap, usb watchdog, cleanups, mount checks). Bump Fonts to v4.0.N! * Tweaked the usb-watchodg (Way cleaner handling of false-positives & race conditions) * Don't trap duokan & font_pkg update files. * Updated fc-scan binary (updated fontconfig & TC, slightly more dynamically linked) * Multiples fixes to the browser fonts handling (proper config generation, and make sure the cache gets generated in the right place) * Way saner checks to avoid applying the hack twice. * A few code cleanups. * And the big new feature: You can now override the freetype library used. Which means you can get, for example, FT's autohinter (like fw 2.x) on a K3 ![]() ![]() Bump USBNetwork to v0.29.N! * Updated all the binaries (Updated TC) * The busybox binary now includes the httpd applet * Passwordless SSH login no matter what when connecting from localhost * A few code cleanups * Properly fix the switch back to usbms when using the autoboot feature, and properly fix nearly all instances of 'nothing is exported over usb' weirdness. (Just don't update/boot with USB plugged in). I also updated the x-tc archive accordingly ![]() In each case, the changes are fairly consequent, so, to avoid any weird issues, I recommend doing a full restart after updating all your hacks ![]() @mods: Thanks for the thread title update ![]() Last edited by NiLuJe; 11-13-2010 at 04:00 PM. |
