It seem to me that the test criteria aren't because they expect you to need to do a slalom course on the road, or go over long thin bridges, but because by being able to pass the test you show that you have extremely good control over your bike.

Agreed; if you're prepared for the worst 10% they know you can handle the other 90%. Be grateful; in our state you simply have to show you can operate the controls and make it back alive from a road test. Makes it easy for you, but also for everyone else. This is why emergency-room nurses here refer to spring and summer as "donor season".

While we're at it I'd like to implement Germany's driver exam system. It'll never happen because there's no money in it, but a guy can dream.

wait wait wait. I thought you were training to be a cop! Are they just training you to get away from the cops?

We never have that white stuff here. In the middle of winter it doesn't get cold enough!

Be a cop?
Hell, I'm 64 years old! Who in their right mind would hire me to be a cop?!?
This training is simply to convert my US license to a Japanese one! Besides, in Japan, no one is allowed to be a cop except Japanese with pure pedigrees going back five generations.

95% of the locals don't have to even take the National test. If they go to a local driving school and pass the school's own classes, they automatically get their license. As the school's reputation is made or broken by the number of students who pass, the in-house tests tend to be much more forgiving. If you were to see the average local rider trying to handle a big bike here, you'd wonder how they ever passed the test.

I watched a young women test yesterday for the 400cc license... She put her right foot down two times during the test, knocked over a pylon going through the "L-turn" course, and stalled out when starting on the incline. She passed. In the National test, putting her foot down once would disqualify her. Unfortunately, I can't qualify for the in-house test and have to take it at the National testing center. Bummer...

A restaurant perhaps. You could be chef-cop. Oh! I've just had an idea for a crappy Television series that just makes it past pilot before floundering and being cancelled after three episodes... Chef-Cop: Julienne of Justice (starring Stitchawl McGraw in the title role)

Cheers,
Marc

Thank you but...

... the last play I acted in was a production of "Peter Pan." I was one of the Lost Boys who erected a small pre-fab structure over a Sleeping Wendy while singing...
'we'll be happy as mouse
and build a tiny little house
For Wendy.... Darling Wendy'
... at which time I tripped over one of the other Lost Boys, dropped the roof on top of darling Wendy, then fell on it myself adding not only insult to injury but pain as well. I was so embarrassed I ended my acting career on the spot! I was seven years old at the time. As you can see, I has scarred my psyche forever.
