Giving people a choice like that wouldn't be consistent with the whole apple experience.

Or next month... But it's still a good thing. Having an internet-less ipad is having a dead slab in your hands. Anyways I hope they keep the orientation switch.

I think 4.2 was originally promised in "the fall," and then, eventually narrowed down to November officially. Today was the rumored release date, but I don't think it was ever made official, so the delay isn't really a delay as long as they still get the update out this month. I'm still hopeful it will happen this month, and haven't heard anything yet to imply that it won't.

I believe it stands for "gold master" but I can't remember why I think that. But essentially what it is is the potential final release version. After constantly updating beta versions, the GM version is the one that is actually finished, unless further errors are discovered before it gets releasesd.

Now that I have updated to 4.2 (4.2.1 rather), I have to say that I'm not too bothered with the new setup. Since I've acclimated to it going into the gadget menu to toggle this doesn't take that much longer.

Interestingly Apple's own apps seem to completely ignore the new "mute" switch.

the mute switch only mutes sounds like the mail notification etc.
it does not mute the sound of your video playing or the music of the ipod app

Sorry but i hate it - its BS. I have an new gen Apple TV so i love the AirStream feature. Thats why i am fine with the update but to remove the rotation switch lock and replace it with a (notification) mute is just bullshit.

I love it

The orientation switch going is mildly annoying, but having all my apps nicely grouped on one screen instead of eleven is worth the sacrifice for me

It does mute the VLC player. As well as some games I have loaded. I guess this is an optional thing for software developers.

I still hate the loss of the rotation switch... And perhaps that now everything goes automatically into multitasking o_O Still getting used to it....
