No, this is the first of the two which should have been the last.

They split the final book into two.

Uhm... second of the three?

Robert Jordan planned to write the twelfth and last book under the title "A Memory of Light".

After his death, Brandon Sanders was chosen to write that book. It turned out to be massive (see this announcement), and was split into three books:
- "The Gathering Storm", the first WoT title written by Brandon,
- "Towers of Midnight" is the second, now released book, and
- the working title for the last book as of now is "A Memory of Light" (according to this page)

Robert Jordan died in 2007 after the publication of Book 11 in the series. He left notes to complete the series which was only going to be one book (A Memory of Light).

After Brandon Sanderson started writing AMoL he realised that to put everything into one book would make it about 2000 pages long. Even by Wheel of Time standards this is excessive, so the book was chopped into three bits. The first bit "The Gathering Storm" was published in Nov last year (I believe the ebook has just been released for those who aren't geo-restricted). "Towers of Midnight" was released on Tuesday (and it's very good, btw) and the ebook will be released in Feb 2011. The final installment (A Memory of Light) will be released in Nov 2011. These dates are fairly firm, and all this info was originally released in the preface to TGS last year. ToM was released dead on time, and the progress on AMoL also appears to be solid. (If anyone wants to confirm this, check out Tor.com and Dragonmount.com) for more info.

Actually, A Memory of Light has been delayed until March 2012.

He loses some cash because I don't buy his next book. Or any other series that he writes because I don't feel that I can trust him to meet a deadline. I lose reading his work.

We both lose a little. There are plenty of other great writers out there I can read and the few dollars he gets from me is not really going to hurt him.

He can call it being artistic, I call it bad business.
If you read George R.R. Martin's blog, you will know he doesn't sit around writing the 5th book, he has other books he is working on. He is managing as best as he can. This is not an excuse, I think he should cut back and work on few less things, the man is in his 60s.

Yup, it's why I haven't even read A Feast for Crows, it's been sitting on my shelf for what....3 years now? Autographed and all.

That's why I have not even started to read ASOIAF. He doesn't give a tinniest rat's ass about his fans. He does what pleases him. Fair enough. I just ignore him, unless he finishes the series before I pass away.

Amen.

If an author is lucky, they develop a following. People who find their works to be excellent and enjoyable. When an author is writing a series, those followers are going to want to read that series. The author, because I know Mr. Martin is not the only one to do this, has to make a choice regarding how he spends his time and what he writes. If the author of a successful series chooses to work on a ton of different projects he should expect that people waiting for his next book in that series are going to get impatient. Especially when there is a release date announced, then passed, another release date announced, then passed, and then no news on when to expect the book.

The rumor on the last book was that it was too large to be one book so it was going to be divided in two. Because the draft of the one book was completed, the two books were suppose to come out pretty quickly. It has been three years, with many a past release date, and no fourth book.

Mr. Martin is free to work on what he wants to work on. That is his choice. He should not be surprised when people complain that he has not released the fourth book in his series after missing deadlines while working on other projects.

Precisely why I haven't started the series. First I was hooked on King's Dark Tower series (30 years to complete it??? And I didn't start reading it until the 90s!) and he nearly died in a car accident. Then Wheel of Time, and Jordan DID die. Thankfully Sanderson is doing a great job and actually moving the plot along. No way I'm going to start another gripping unfinished series. I have no patience!

Thanks for the link and info! That helps me refine my reading schedule for '11 and the beginning of '12 then. Won't start WoT til mid '11 instead of the beginning.

Whew, who knew that reading was something you needed to plan out?

Maybe I should get more serious about my reading. I pick up a book, read a chapter or two, see if it interests me and then if it doesnt I leave it alone. Some interest me but I end up not finishing them for months due to other things. The first Wheel Of Time is like that. Ive been meaning to finish this book for years and intend to someday hopefully. Maybe by the time I get up to the current book the series will be finished.

I just picked this book up in Borders, flipped through it, saw it was so long and thought 'Maybe in ebook format'. That hardcover is entirely too heavy for my tastes after getting used to reading ebooks. Its funny because I didnt think like that back when the final Harry Potter came out. I dont think I was into ereaders back then either. Why they would hold off on releasing the book in ebook format I dont know. Ive noticed that it seems alot of people are oppose to releasing their book in ebook format because they want people to read the actual books but yet they release it in audiobook format. That makes no sense IMHO but then again Im not the author or publisher.

Hey reading a good heavy book is as good as an entertaining workout! LOL.

It's really not that heavy, it weighs in at what...2 or 3 pounds? Maybe it's just me, but 2 or 3 pounds isn't going to strain my muscles, and I'm a weakling

Just read it in another forum. From ASOIAF fan to the author:
Spoiler:
Dear Mr. Martin, what have you done? It’s so horrible and it can’t be undone. My problem is this; I have read thousands of pages of A Song of Ice and Fire on certain characters and grown attached to them AND they have all died!

It is another reason why I am not sure whether I will ever read him. Some say that the delay with a new book is related to the fact that
Spoiler:
he killed off all main characters, now he doesn't know what to write about...

Frankly speaking there are so many other fantasy series that I do not worry
