I missed that description, glad you reposted it! Sounds right up my alley!

I got a good start on Ulysses last night. For those of us in the collective, I thought this website was a good little motivator, mainly because it reassures me that I'm not necessarily stupid if I don't know what it all means :

Reading Life by Keith Richards, lead guitar of The Rolling Stones. Fascinating if you are the least bit a Rock and Roll fan.

I'm finding the orthography quite painful. OK, by careful reading you can (mostly) work out what parts are direct speech, which parts internal monologue/day-dreaming, which parts are description.

But why should I? That's why it's standard to use quotation marks for direct speech, and usual to denote inner monologue by italics, or a different font.

Some of the words and phrases are fun. Some of the sentences are OK. The paragraphs drag a bit.

I'll read a bit more, but I'm not yet persuaded.

I'm still reading Miss Mackenzie by Anthony Trollope, and I'm still enjoying it...but...he's started going on tangents about women liking it when men abuse them and how a woman (or a man, to be fair) isn't happy unless they're married and how women forgive crimes/lying/etc more easily than a man because they can't recognize it for what it is. And. Well. It's sort of making me angry. I know it's Victorian morals and what not, but seriously! I knew they had some messed-up ideas about women, but it's kind of shocking to see them laid out there straight on. Know what I mean? And it's said so matter-of-factly, too.

I'm glad we've (almost completely) moved on from that mindset now in our times, sheesh.

You describe exactly the reason I despise Victorian lit so badly. Even (gasp!) Austen. It is clearly fictional and unrelated to reality, but it always has underlying morals lessons. Morals that make me want to scream, "You stupid girls! Why do you devalue yourselves like that?"

I was zooming through Discworld, but hit a gridlock with Feet of Clay. I just can't seem to read it for more than a few minutes before I am asleep. It is the only book in the series, so far, that I have not be captivated by. However, it is one of the funniest. I love the puns and keep waking Tim up with my laughter.

I have Hogfather queued up and ready to read next.

Hogfather is one of my favorites.

I try not to read more than 2 or 3 in a row. I enjoy them more and there's no danger of getting burned out. My next Pratchett will be The Thief of Time but I'm not sure when I'll get to it.

If you like Hogfather - get the DVD - we watch it every year at Xmas - it's a wonderful film adaptation of the book.

It makes me appreciate the books that DON'T do that more. Like Woman in White-- it's got some problems still, but Marian is such a wonderfully different character that I really like it. Or Henrik Isben's A Doll's House, which is actually a play but still really good. Or The Awakening, which was written by a woman (Kate Chopin) and is REALLY good. Or The Yellow Wallpaper, which was also written by a woman (Charlotte Perkins Gilman)!

Now that I think about it, I wonder if books written by Victorian women would be in general better about women's issues? I haven't actually read that many; I'm going to have to explore more, I think.

Well, I'll add to it then... Amelia Peabody with steampunk, vampires, and werewolves! Funny as anything, Lilac, you have to read it.
I finished it... haven't decided what I'm starting on next. I have a bunch of new things to choose from (Tuesday was new release day for mysteries so I bought a lot).

I just finished "The Tiger" by John Vaillant. Phew! I don't think I'll look at my cat getting ready to pounce the same way again. Great book, I must say.

Now after my Reader charges I'm going to start "The Lies that Bind" by Kate Carlisle, the third in her Bibliophile mysteries.

I have to read a book a day for the rest of the year to make my goal of 250 books by the end of the year (why oh why did I slack off in May & June???). Day five and I'm already exhausted. Thankfully it's almost the weekend...
