"A joke is at most a temporary rebellion against virtue, and its aim is not to degrade the human being but to remind him that he is already degraded." -- George Orwell, from his essay "Funny, But Not Vulgar."

Yes, that sig made me smile too

I was browsing the New Republic blog and came upon this, from Robert Alter's translation of the Bible (The Wisdom Books)

Quote:
For the fate of the sons of man and the fate of the beast is a single fate. As one dies so dies the other, and all have a single spirit, and man’s advantage over the beast is naught, for everything is mere breath. Everything goes to a single place. Everything was from the dust, and everything goes back to the dust. Who knows whether man’s spirit goes upward and the beast’s spirit goes down to the earth?

I love that one! Orwell really had a way with words.

Education and intelligence are not mutually inclusive, education is the sum of acquired knowledge, while intelligence is the ability to adapt and utilize knowledge acquired.

With enough information all things are understandable, with the understanding that we may never have enough information.

In honor of Veterans Day, those in the Police / Fire departments and all those who put themselves in harms way to keep us safe.

Only those who’ve insured the freedom of strangers can truly comprehend its meaning and appreciate its value. Honor always, those willing to sacrifice their tomorrows for your today.

..... I do not know what I may appear to the world; but to myself I seem to have been only a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.

I did an advanced search for "sea-shore" and "WT Sharpe" before I posted it, then did a regular search for "Sea-shore and it didn't show up, but it could be. Maybe I should try again without the hyphen.

It's a well-known quote, more well-known than many I post here. Perhaps you saw it somewhere else on the web.
