The great thing about the "no chocolate pledge" is that you don't have to keep it. There are all kinds of temptations this time of year to help you, if you were to actually need any help.

But I'm having trouble with your concept of my "share." Share? I get all the chocolate. There is no "share" in chocolate.

That's what I'm mostly doing.

I do have some mainstream "big press" authors that I will read "no matter what" (mostly romance). Even in their cases I'm carefully picking out any cheaper backlist books or "bestsellers" that have dropped in price.

I read free books from Amazon. It introduces me to new authors in a range of genres. Not all of them are "good", but I judge them with the same standards I might judge a book I bought at a yard sale for a quarter. If they're a decent time waster, I'm satisfied.

I have a large collection of past ebook purchases. I'm happy to re-read books and so have been re-reading many of my old favorites.

I'm reading one Public Domain book a month.

Because I also read sci-fi/fantasy, I also drop into Baen from time to time. I'm trying to wok my way through the Baen Free library which is harder going than I expected (it didn't look that BIG on the site ).

Finally, I routinely check out the author self-promotion threads and buy books by authors who promote themselves on Mobileread. The books are usually cheaper than the big houses and I get the warm/fuzzy satisfaction of knowing they get higher royalties by self-publishing or going through a smaller publishing house.

This keeps me in a good mix of new/old/familiar/unfamiliar/established/novice books.

My plan? I buy the dirt cheap ones from independent authors. Every time I see a cheap ebook with a decent sounding plot I snatch it up.

Dont think the big publishers know or care that cheap prices cause impulse buys like that or else theyd lower their prices.

My plan is to continue taking advantage of free books (classics, promotions, baens free library etc) and continue using kobo's coupons that come out pretty often. I'm also willing to wait for new release books to come down in price.

What I said above, except for you said it much shorter. I've always been a bit wordy.

I did notice via backlist books that a couple of ebooks I downloaded from less than reputable sites by an author are available via smashwords in multiformat for $5. I deleted my books and I'll be picking them up and selling my paperbacks as soon as I get some spare cash. I'm cool with buying un-DRM'd books at reasonable prices.

I think most people that do e-books haven't experienced DRM gone haywire like me. I'm the family techy of sorts and I get called on to help people when they have trouble.

I think most people haven't seen an online store shut down, haven't seen someone lose DRM'd iTunes content, haven't had to use a crack on someone's legit program just to make it work right. Once you've experienced this kind of stuff a few times you tend to start shunning DRM as much as possible. Most of those people, admittedly, don't go as far as I do (I don't like even "friendly" or "reliable" DRM like Kindle or Steam), but still.

My plan is to keep what I'm doing now. Read old masters from Project Gutenberg, public domain books, and blog posts I convert to .mobi files.

I rarely buy ebooks because for me there is too much out there I can read first. If there is something I must buy I'll shop around and find the best deal and convert if I have to.

Just got through reading all these interesting comments. I love my ebooks but find it frustrating that many old classic mystery works (by authors like Michael Innes, Margery Allingham, Arthur Upfield etc.) are simply not available. I long for a system whereby we can acquire these titles "on demand". I guess I could try to accumulate them in paperback and scan them but I just can't imagine that electronic copies of them don't exist SOMEWHERE. Those are the books I would pay a little more for. New books I can just wait till the prices eventually fall. Oh, and I hate DRM.

Im seeing scanning mentioned alot here, doesnt that take forever and a day? Besides that I figure that by the time youre finished with scanning, OCRing and editing and you have the finished ebook you probably couldve read the book already.

True. BUT, once the work is done, you can read it AGAIN! [and as many times as you wish ]

Add me to the list of those who are NOT buying books from any publishers that use DRM no matter what. As for agency pricing, I will pay no more than $6.99 for an ebook - not that I intend to buy many at that price, that's just as high as I'll go. I'm starting to dig into Baen, Smashwords and other like them.

Even if by some miracle DRM is gotten rid of, I still refuse to purchase from big houses because authors are not getting enough of a percentage in royalties. I don't have exact figures, but why authors aren't getting 50% as a minimum is beyond me, but maybe I'm strange. Every now and them I'll run across a post or blog that spells it out and I'm always shocked by what I see.

You won't buy books from certain publishers because you believe they don't give the author enough of a cut. So you feel that no money going to the author (by you not buying their book) is better than a little going their way? I'm sure the authors who signed contracts (which, I suspect, specified what sort of percentage they would receive) with the 'big houses' would agree with your stance.
