The WiFi Kobo will never shut off automatically, they found the battery life wasn't/shouldn't be as bad so they removed the auto-shutoff.

Ahhh ok... so the dying in 3 days after no use IS a battery issue then. I thought maybe because it was not sleeping that may have been the issue.... but I guess for me its just hardware. Good to know. Getting my new one tomorrow!

Quick question before, not sure if anyone else asked... do you have an SD card in the slot most times? Some customers have reported less battery life when there is an SD card inserted.

Also, the wifi turns off automatically when you are reading, to preserve battery and tries to reconnect to the known network as needed.

If the hardware is fine, no reason for panic. I assume that a little
of talk would help. A poll on user behavior. That way manufacturer
could learn what people want and how they use the reader.
First part of quote is fine to me. The second part might be wrong.
Let people turn it on manually. If you offer no wifi upgrade, why it
has to be on all the time?

Hi Zoran, it will only turn on if it was on before you entered the reading experience (i.e. you turned it on and you expect it to be on, but you are reading right now so we turn it off).

If it is explicitly disabled, it will stay off as you commanded.

I keep reading about references to 1.7.1 firmware (not Desktop version)....my device only shows 1.7.

Is there in fact a 1.7.1 version that will display as such on the device itself?

Mine shows 1.7 (r19517) October 7th. Is this the latest?

I had the same question about versions. I just exchanged my kobo and as soon as I plugged it in to the PC it "updated". The version says 1.7 (r19517) October 7th as well though. Not 1.7.1. They also mentioned that there had been a USB issue by the way but were not clear as to what the problem was. Never used an SD card in it yet by the way.

Also my PC at work still shows 1.7 (october 15) but I believe my PC at home shows 1.7.1. Is there a way to update my work desktop? Ctrl + Shift + U does not work... i don't know where I heard about this but it has never done anything.

Can someone clearly say what version the desktop should say and what version the KOBO itself should say?

They had put out the 1.7.1 upgrade last week. It automatically prompted me to download it when I turned on the wifi. I exchanged that Kobo for another one last Friday (wanted a different colour), assuming the new one would download the upgrade as soon as I turned on the Wifi, but it didn't. So I called up the Kobo folks to find out how to get the upgrade, and they told me they actually found more problems with the 1.7.1 than it was fixing, so they recalled it. They're working on a new one, which should be coming out any day now. Don't know if it'll still be called 1.7.1, or if it'll be 1.7.2, but anyway, that's the word I got from Kobo on Monday morning.

There will be a Desktop upgrade to 1.7.2 to solve an issue a few users have been having. It is being pushed out right now. We had to temporarily disable the firmware upgrade while we are pushing it out. Once the new Desktop app is out, we will turn the WiFi/firmware upgrade back on.

Should be done by midnight.

Cool, thanks for the info! I guess that means I can stop checking for the firmware upgrade every 1/2 hr and just wait til tonight...
So the 1.7.2 is only for the desktop, but the firmware for the Kobo itself will still be the 1.7.1?

Wow... I don't think I could be MORE upset with the Kobo wifi. I exchanged my kobo yesterday, got a BRAND NEW one... went back to work, charged it for 4 hours which was an hour longer than it needed... did the updates and everything as soon as it was plugged in.

Came home last night, loaded my book back onto the new reader around 6pm... It is now 4 pm the day after and I went to update the desktop... pulled out my kobo out of curiosity and it's DEAD. Needs to be charged already. Wifi has been off, it was sleeping since last night and has not been touched since I put it to sleep.

NEVER had these problems with the original.... I am either going to go back to the original one tomorrow or move on to another brand. I am so upset!

I'm also still having battery problems. I've got a launch Kobo WiFi and had the bad battery problem. When 1.7.1 came out I upgraded right away and the battery appeared to go away. Then tonight I grabbed my Kobo off my night stand and it was dead.

I'm running Kobo 1.7.1 r20207, Oct 22 2010.

Any suggestions? After reading the above post I'm hesitent to waste my time swapping it at Chapters since the problem seems almost random at this point. I don't use the WiFi so that didn't kill it.

Any other ideas? Or do I wait for another firmware release?

I'm not sure how long the battery should last, but I'm at 9 days now and my battery shows a little above half charge. I haven't shut it off for those 9 days - just sleep and a couple hours reading a day.

I read maybe 150-200 pages over the last 7 days and it died over night after I finished reading a few pages.
