Having never seen the performance improvements in page turns at each firmware update I thought I'd do some basic tests before and after. I have the EU 3G model; I was running 3.0.2 preview (529960105) and updated to the 3.0.3 preview (536720111).
The test was to open a book (Stephen King's Under the Dome as purchased from the Kindle store), go to the cover page, and then perform 20 page turns as quickly as possible. Repeated this three times for each test case, the figure shown is the average of the three runs. 3.0.2: 10.7 seconds (0.54s per turn) 3.0.2 after reboot: 8.6 seconds (0.43s per turn) 3.0.3 after first boot: 8.1 seconds (0.41s per turn) Whilst this was a bit of a rough set of tests, the suggestion is that the reboot has a noticeable effect on the page turn speed, whereas the 3.0.3 update itself hasn't really sped things up. |

@Fluffy: This matches my experience, with no stopwatch running.
I don't know why, but the reboot really changes things, but then again. Could the number of books be a factor ? Indexing is done, but still ? Cheers |

When 3.0.3 comes out OTA, will it still be able to install if I have the USB Network hack active or will the update fail or even (God forbit) brick my Kindle?

The 3.0.3 and any other updates will not break your hacks and you can always install new updates and the hacks will not break any firmware updates. Hacks are add-ons or features using the Linux system that amazon did not include (yet ![]() The only snag in jailbreaking: if you get a new Kindle and its firmware is newer than the hack can handle you need to wait for a new version of the hack. So once jailbroken your Kindle remains jailbroken except for a full re-install of your kindle or in case of getting a new Kindle with newer firmware. |

This was ( is - I won't be updating if this is borked ) the only reason I used the browser at all. I wonder why it's working differently for different people? Worth getting to the bottom of that. |

I'm the one who said article mode wasn't working the same, but this morning it started working again. 'm happy that its working but don't understand why. It's not like I tried article mode once after the update and decided that it didn't work. I had tried it multiple times a day for several days and it didn't work. I even restarted my kindle a few times and erased the browsing history and even turned off javascript and images for awhile. I did send feedback to amazon about it though. Maybe that was it.

I just updated to 3.0.3 preview. As it turns out, it breaks the left-justification preference edit. "Justification: Left, Full" is still there in the menu, but doesn't change anything anymore, everything is full-justified.
It still allows you to edit margins though. Edit: I am happy to have to apologize for the alarming post: those were only some badly converted files which seem to have forced justification. For most books, the setting still works. Last edited by rafalski; 10-28-2010 at 09:09 AM. |

Fuzzy fonts :-(
For me with the 3.0.3 upgrade all fonts became more fuzzy. I received my Kindle 3 on friday and I was heavily impressed by the clearness of the text display, but after the update the regular and condensed fonts became a bit more fuzzy and the sans serif fonts are clearly more fuzzy than with 3.0.2.
I really HATE 3.0.3, since I miss the clearness of the fonts from 3.0.2 and did not recognize anything than a much worse displaying of fonts. ![]() It ruins my whole Kindle experience now and I would go back to 3.0.2 right away if it would be possible. Since it is not I have to pray and wait for another update. ![]() Last edited by bitschnau; 10-31-2010 at 12:31 PM. |

I am wondering if you have and issue with your kindle itself. I have been using 3.0.3 from the day it was released for preview and the screen and fonts are great.

No, everything is perfect, just the fonts are not rendered clearly any more. They were much better before and I read on the amazon forums, I am not the only one having this issue, but it's only a few people having these problems. For the most, the update works fine. :-(

Okay, so what's the official version now. Mine came with 3.0.1. I upgraded to 3.0.2 and it was official for a day or two then disappeared. 3.0.3 is still beta?
So, what's the story? |

3.0.3 is still beta, so hopefully the issues will be corrected before release.
That's the story. |
