Let's be pragmatic here for a moment. First, the only devices I have which I can read ereader.com books on are my Ipod Touch and Ipad. I am totally dependent on these guys for loading books- from their Bookshelf- onto those devices. So, what is the solution- ummm, buy from Amazon.

Seriously, if a reseller doesn't want to make it convenient to buy ebooks, and price them reasonably, then they will be driven from th market. As for this nonsense with ereader and Fictionwise, I wonder if anyone is considering a class action lawsuit? They have definitely deprived buyers of products that they purchased.

Very cool- they do it just like the Darknet ebook sites- the ebook doesn't actually reside on the site, only a LINK to the ebook <G>. What will these guys think of next?

I would not recommend buying from either Fictionwise or their subsidiary, ereader.com. I was unable to download over 40 books I had purchased from ereader for over 2 months; if you read their books on Apple devices you are dependent on their Bookshelf to load these books onto the device.

Also, for the past year or so, every book I saw on ereader that I was interested in cost much less on Amazon (Kindle store); sometimes books that ereader charged $20 for were 9.99 at Amazon.

It has to do (IMHO) in this case with the business model that Fictionwise was running under. That business model goes totally against what the agency 5 will allow. I think once everyone is done with The club and the rebates that we will see these books come back to Fictionwise at silly ridiculous prices.

They recently became available for the nook, which might explain why they are no longer available on FW. (But why not have them available there as well as on B&N for people who don't have a nook or don't like DRM? ) Also, I don't think Magazines of Fantasy and Science Fiction is available for the nook.

Fictionwise SF Magazines update

Here's the reply I got from Analog - emphasis mine:

"Thank you for your email. We are aware that Fictionwise.com no longer offers Analog SF by subscription. While we license content to Fictionwise.com, we cannot control their business decisions. I would recommend that you bring your concern directly to them, which I understand you've already one.

We appreciate your readership and I apologize for any inconvenience
you've been caused."

I didn't contact Asimov's but since they have the same owner I suspect the answer would be the same.
Pity, since I'm not interested in their DRM offerings. There's still hope the individual issues will be available but a slim one at that.
I wonder if charge back will work; I gues we'll see if they drop it altogether.

My own opinion is that the magazine subscriptions have been dropped because B&N do not want an ongoing commitment to keeping Fictionwise open. I think that individual issues will be available as long as Fictionwise is in business.

Why on earth can't B and N keep fictionwise open and have them focus on their multi-format library, which is considerable. Then they could keep all the things that made Fictionwise a good deal: the buy-wise club, micropay, coupons, etc. There is a big market for DRM free ebooks (Fictionwise even had the initiative to set up its own Kindle store); are the folks at B and N just too pig-headed to capitalize on it?

In a word: Yes.

Ebooks are just starting to hit mainstream awareness, and the Big 6 publishers have a lot invested in DRM. They don't want mainstream customers to go looking for ebooks and discover two types: bestsellers by authors they've heard of, laden with crippling software, and indie-published books by authors they don't know, that are easy to use on any device and can be (legitimately or not) shared with friends.

They've got to be praying that Baen doesn't figure out how to sell ebooks at Amazon. (For a long time, Amazon wouldn't let publishers sell w/o DRM; that's possibly changing as more individual authors demand the right to sell their books DRM-free.)

Barnes & Noble doesn't want a non-DRM, multi-device ebookstore (with a better search engine) competing with their our-software-only, our-devices-only ebookstore that ties into their physical bookstore.

It looks very much like BN acquired Fictionwise in order to kill it.

I thought BN acquired Fictionwise to get their hands on the rights to the eReader DRM, which they then applied to epub as well. It actually takes the books away from the 'our-devices-only' and allows for as many devices as have access to ADE updated software to use BN ebooks.

I don't like DRM, but if there is going to be DRM, I would rather it be something like BN uses, which I can control than something like Adept or Kindle which is server based.

I think Smashwords has a good opportunity here to see if they can get all the multi-format stuff from FW to their system. I'm not sure if authors on Fictionwise gave them exclusive or not. Also, Smashwords could perhaps do some type of "move your books" thing where they will somehow transfer any multi-format ebooks you have bought from FW over to your Smashwords account

I suspect they could've bought the rights to eReader DRM without taking over the store. (However, they might've wanted *exclusive and total* rights to the DRM, and might've taken over the store as part of that.)

Since I'm prone to using "obsolete" devices (I got a Clie a couple of years after Sony stopped supporting them, and used it daily for two years), I'm not happy with any DRM. My preference for one form over another is entirely based on how easy it is to crack. And that's all academic for me at the moment; I don't currently have the ability to deal with any DRM other than watermarking.

Occasionally, I think it'd be nice to get some of the DRM'd freebies available. But right now, I've got three new Smashwords books in my reader and one of my favorite fanfic authors just posted a story of 180,000 words, so I'm set for a while. When I run out of entertaining non-DRM'd content, I'll revisit the issue.

I stopped using Fictionwise shortly after the B&N acquisition. Things just stopped working right.

B & N has removed is removing more & more books from FW. Even the ones that were formerly multiformat. It will probably disappear altogether within a year if not sooner.

I got a 50% off email for this weekend and wandered by FW for the first time since the spring.

They no longer carry Adobe PDF or Adobe ePub. Their catalog is exclusively Multiformat and eReader.
