So if you convert to an .epub that will be over the size limit, do you loose content, if so what is a good alternative format without this limitation.

Personally I stay away from PDF files, but some PDF conversions will keep the ligatures your referring to if you check the Keep Ligatures box in the common options section (see attached).

I may not understand the context of your comment, if so I apologize in advance. By default on conversion to epub calibre splits files into 260k file size or smaller. Check the epub output to verify.

Unfortunately, the 'Keep Ligatures' menu option doesn't seem to be available in the Linux version of Calibre. Or, if it is, it is well hidden.

If you can't find it under Preferences - Common Options - Look and Feel then I guess the question is what version of calibre are you running?

The latest version available in the Ubuntu Linux repositories is 0.6.42

that is a VERY old version, so many of e features discussed in this forum will not be available.

You are probably far better off using the binary install package direct from the calibre home site. Calibre is updated frequently (roughly once a week) so if you only use the repository versions you will always be very out-of-date.

That's 37 versions out of date. Do us and yourself a favor and either update to the newest version using the binary install found here or stop asking questions about use.

the problem with double l when converting from pdf is still there, but it can be overcome when editing using Sigil.
The issue with centre justification seems to be fine now.

Converting from PDF is very problematic, because PDF is a static print layout format and epub is a completely reflowable format. Glad to see the centering issue is fixed.

Hi - First of all I'd like to say that Kovid - and all the developers are my heroes - Calibre is an excellent piece of software already, and just gets better with each update. Good job guys (and girls?).

I'll admit now that I haven't read through all the posts regarding epub format - although I have read through all the topics that seemed relevant.

My question relates to the files created by calibre when adding metadata and a cover to the epub book. Calibre creates and stores two extra files - "cover.jpg" and "metadata.opf" and stores these in the folder with the epub file.

Since the epub file is really just a renamed zip file, is it not possible to simply add these two extra files into the epub - then the book, with cover and metadata are less likely to become separated?

I have tried doing this manually, and it seems to work okay - is there some reason why they need to be separate files?

Equivalents of the two files already are stored in the EPUB, provided you want them there. EPUBs have a cover image and a content.opf. The two files stored externally ensure that you can easily recover the database, even if you have no EPUB formats.

In my html uploads for the Kindle DTP, I use this for a page break:

Calibre seems to ignore it. Is the language incorrect for this purpose?

Instead, Calibre seems to break sections by <h2> or <h1> headings. For example, following a frontispiece image and caption I inserted a page break as above. Next page is the title page, and it began with a quote, followed by the book title in <h1> centered. Instead, Calibre appended the quote to the frontispiece caption, started the new page with the title, and then started another page with the author's name. I can work around the first by putting the quote at the bottom of the title page instead of the top, but one hardly wants the title page itself split into two pages.

Am I doing something wrong? (I'm opening the htm file in a folder with the relevant *.css file and the included images.) I then convert it to an epub.

As an alternative, I could double zip the htm file and images and email it to free.kindle.com and get back a Mobi file, then convert that to an epub. But then I fear I will have lost the style sheet since I don't use them in the Kindle versions.

I am using the extra CSS option in Calibre 0.7.28 when creating epub files to change the default font for my Sony PRS-950 and Sony PRS-505.

However, I have to "tweak" the epub file and replace font references in the stylesheet.css file such as "Berling Antiqua" to "LexiaDaMa" for it to work properly.

Is there a simpler way to do this? If I delete stylesheet.css will it be rebuilt with defaults? I can't seem to find anywhere in Calibre where I can ignore stylesheet.css. I am able to get the results I need by searching through stylesheet.css and rebuilding the epub, just looking for a cleaner solution.
