I don't particularly like going to the theatre, the whole unwashed masses, crying children, overpriced bad for you theatre food and no cat in your lap sort of deal... but! there ARE some movies that deserve at least a first view in the theatre... the Star Wars offerings, Avatar, many of the Dreamworks animated offerings, and Harry Potter all qualify in my book

Yep, I agree. There are certain films that just have to be seen in a theatre. To avoid the masses and some of the ticket cost (but not the over priced food) go to an afternoon matinee if you can.

that's easy to do in the winter when I'm not skiing, but to tear myself away from enjoying good weather the rest of the year almost seems criminal there is a relatively new theatre the next town down that in addition to having the 3D movies (and even some chairs that move!) has one theatre that is limited to 21 and above! not only do you not have to contend with kids running around and crying babies you can get a beer or a wine while watching! I suppose it would be too much to ask to think that they would have an adult screening of HP!

2 weeks. That's my rule. Amazing how empty the theaters get after that time. And yes, afternoon on a weekday or the last show to avoid kids. Disclaimer: I love kids - just not at the movies , although college or high school kids are infinitely worse (I'm a grad student so I don't count ). OMG - I've turned into a "shusher" . To be fair to the little kids (at HP movies) - they just ask cute questions that don't really don't bother me too much .

There's an idea!

An adults only midnight screening of the Harry Potter movie!
Medication optional!
They could have it at the same time as an adults only midnight screening of the Twilight movie! Medication optional!
Then both sides can rumble in the parking lot after the movie!
A Cougars on Crack Smackdown!

Interesting. Here is a question: When you go to the movies, do you do it to primarily enjoy the movie, or do you do it to enjoy the experience. I personally do it for the experience. I dislike empty theaters. I need the full experience - lots of popcorn, soda, and plenty of crazy kids making out and throwing chips at each other. OK, maybe not the last part, but other than that, I really enjoy the experience.

My cousin on the hand demands absolute silence in a movie theater. And oh dear if the sound or video system has a flaw. There's no kidding with him then.

I stopped going to the cinema because of the whole overpriced, uncomfortable (at least for the yeti, who is on the tall side at 6'7") experience. I'd much sooner relax at home, pause the movie when I want to get a drink, and have the volume at a level that suits my ears, not aimed at filling a vast cavernous space

Heh, maybe it is the part in me that doesn't want to grow up. Going to the movies = great memories.

I never went to the cinema as a young child (think I first went when I about 11 or so) - there wasn't one in the small town I grew up in.

Which is very odd given I grew up in Borehamwood, home to Elstree Studios! (I believe they do now have a cinema)

I haven't been in a movie theater since the opening weekend of the original "Halloween" movie.

see all of that I avoid like the plague. if I could, I would have a home studio simply to avoid all of that. I like to be the captain of whatever ship I am sailing!

I saw it last night as well, with a friend. The movie theater was half-empty because it had been planned for one theater (which was packed) and they opened up a new screen for the same time showing. That was the first movie I've seen in the theater, actually, and it was a good experience, overall.

I still prefer the books...
