The maximum you will pay for a book

What's the max you will pay for any book? I am getting to the point where I will pay $8 tops.

I'll pay up to 25% below what I'll pay for a pbook. Since I buy MM paperbacks, that works out to about six bucks.

Any book? I paid $70 for a used copy of my Intro to Computer Architecture textbook back when I was in college. New it was $120. So I guess my answer is "somewhere less than $120."

Not sure if by 'any' you mean paper or ebook?

I won't buy a paper novel anymore.

While I haven't done it yet, I could see myself paying up to $20usd for a new release ebook from an author I like.

I know a lot of people get hung up on it, but I personally could care less if the ebook is more than the paper book. Sure it would be nice if the ebook was always less, but if it isn't, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

All I buy now are ebooks. I'll pay new 9.99, and have paid as much as 12.99 for newly released ebook. After that, there is other stuff I'll read.

Along with price increases for newly released ebooks, many paperbacks are now more costly in ebook that the paper version.

I have recently paid $75 for a pbook and have a pbook on order that costs $350 (the limited edition of the forthcoming George Bush book). So I guess for pbook hardcovers (nontextbooks), it is whatever amount I am willing to pay to acquire the title.

OTOH, I recently purchased 2 ebooks at $14.99 each after struggling with myself over spending that amount. I'll not do it again as both books were poorly formatted and proofread. Generally, I think of my ebook upper limit as $6, with most of my ebook purchases ranging in price (excluding the free ones) between 99 cents and $2.99.

It depends on how much I want it.

I don't buy anything other than e-books now, so that's what I will address. I frequent the "Books on the Knob" blog and try to grab any free books that interest me. If they don't interest me, though, I do not bother. Maybe at first I felt the need to download all the free books I could, but not any more. I only get books that I want to read.

I prefer to spend less than $10 for an e-book, but I don't get wrapped around the axle about it. If I want it, I buy it, same as I used to do for DTB.

I actually enjoyed most of my textbooks but I get what you're saying. I'll skip books I bought for my job, too. I paid about $20 for Making Money by Terry Pratchett when it first came out. It's a Discworld novel following up on Going Postal, which as of now is my favorite book in that series. So if I were really anticipating it, I'd go with $20. My usual limit is somewhere around $5-$6 though.

Excellent question fogart, I am referring to printed books. I guess I expect a discount in electronic books.

I think I need more specifics here. P-book or e-book? Category?

For me, how much I'll pay depends on how useful/enjoyable the book seems and what the best price is I can find it for. Those variables differ so much from case to case I can't come up with a specific number.

I really don't get why e-books are the same price as or more expensive than p-books. E-books can't possibly cost the publisher as much to make and distribute.

It really depends on the book and how bad I want it. One time I paid over $40 on EBAY for an ARC of a book I really wanted to read and it was over a month before release date. Actually I split the cost with a friend and we played rock, paper, scissors over who got it first. I lost.

That's one thing I've always been a little shocked that Publishers haven't tried to exploit. They seem so focused on taking and and restricting (geo restrictions and drm etc) - when is somebody going to wake up to the fact that with digital publishing you can offer MORE and then charge out the wazoo for it?

Want the third book in this hot selling series 2 weeks earlier than it will be on the shelves or at Amazon? Here it is in digital form at FULL LIST PRICE available only from the Penguin website directly!

But for most books - $5 to $7. I bought the new Lisa Kleypas book this morning for $8.54 and it was a stretch for me since it isn't really full novel length. I love the author though so I paid.

For paper books I try to limit myself to $5 and under (because I'm on a budget), though if it's a new book and I REALLY want it I'm willing to pay up to $11-12 (new paperbacks/YA hardback normally cost that).

For ebooks the limit is $5 again, and I don't think I'd pay more than...$8, maybe? And only then for new books.
