				Organizing my library

Hi, everyone! Honest, I'll try to not be TOO dense while still a newbie here.

![]() I just bought an iPod Touch on eBay, and plan to use Stanza with it (wanted to get all my e-book collection into one reader, and the Calibre/Stanza combo wound up suiting my needs best, so far as I can tell without having the iTouch in my hands). I have an existing e-book collection in Mobi and PDF formats, so I'm working on the conversion. With hundreds of existing titles, it's going to take a while, and I'd like to be ready to welcome my new toy with content for it. ![]() Question is: once I've converted the PDF file (or the PRC) to ePub format, can I delete the PDF out of my Calibre library folders without giving the software a nervous breakdown? When I add the PDF to my library, it copies it over from my Documents folder (where I prefer it), and my hard drive is not exactly huge, so I don't like unnecessary duplication. Any other advice? Thanks, and hope everyone's having a great weekend! |

If you want to remove a book format from Calibre, you should not do it directly at the OS level, but via the Edit Metadata options within Calibre which also support tidily removing a particular format. This ensures that the Calibre metadata database accurately represents the books stored on the underlying file system.

Having said that my recommendation would be to keep all formats if you can. Ebook files are small and there are times it is useful to have the original source still available. |

Stanza is quite happy to have multiple formats for the same book. I expect for most people that is the default scenario.

			The short answer is yes

you can remove whatever you want with the remove books option. I would suggest that when you are done converting you use the remove all but specific format option. Would be safest to backup library first of course

The ideal would be an option to remove all formats IF and ONLY IF my preferred format exists. Can this be done? |

formats:"=EPUB" and formats:"=MOBI" Change format type as required. Then highlight all and remove specific format via bulk metadata. Last edited by DoctorOhh; 11-19-2010 at 01:00 AM. |

It is easy to write search terms to find any combination of formats.

For instance you might use the search string "not format:ePub" if your preferred format is ePub to know here conversion is outstanding. Using "format:ePub" could be used to find all formats where you have ePub versions so that other formats an be removed. However as stated elsewhere I personally prefer to keep the original formats around so that I can reconvert if I later find I want to tweak the conversion parameters. |

If you go to Edit Metadata and use the remove format drop box you can bulk remove a single format from the books selected. If you want to delete all books selected (all formats) use the remove books icon. Last edited by DoctorOhh; 11-19-2010 at 09:42 AM. |
