The world wasn't saddened by the passing of the carriage, the ice truck or the pocketwatch. Printed books, when they become rare items, will simply be rare items. The world won't be any less for having moved on to better things.

Heh... you make them sound like they're painful, but passingly effective! I happen to think they are great, and have no need for a dedicated device.

Yes, you are. And since you don't trust online services with your data, you can't have a bank since they keep info online. And, of course, you can't pay your bills online. I really don't think there's any need to be this nasty about it. With banks and online merchants, there are recognized dispute-resolution channels and legal protections for me as the consumer.

If some low-wage worker at Carbonite or whatever decides to snoop my files and nab personal information for identity theft purposes, I don't have a lot I can do besides spend years and lots of money straightening out the results.

You missed the part about encryption? Do you think Carbonite and Mozy would have been around as long as they have and survived the financial crunch if they weren't safe and reliable? Whatever.

Not to support paranoia but at least in the US there is a quite a difference. Your own machines in your home are covered by your 4th amendment rights, and would require a search warrant to accesd. Data stored by third parties can be accessed with just a subpoena.
Maybe one shouldn't use online backup services if planning terrorist attacks

Sadly, due to the dispicable Patriot Act, pretty much all civil rights have been suspended since all the government has to do is claim suspected terrorism.

No, I didn't, but I still think the tech staff with direct access to said data and training on that encryption scheme are very well positioned to be able to break same if they are sufficiently motivated.

I prefer to keep my backups under my personal control. YMMV (and obviously does).
