I just finished "The World of P.G. Wodehouse," a little bio I picked up at the library (published before his death). Very interesting, made me want to read more of his work (well, more than I already wanted I should say).

Finished... _Risen_... I quite liked it... rated 3.5 on librarything. I think more could have been done here... it seemed like there was some stuff left out of the story. Also... there wasn't much that "scared" me... then again, Horror rarely scares me.

Started _The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo_ to judge for myself. Seems like people either love it or hate it.

After temporarily abandoning my Kindle for some paper books, I'm back and reading some selections from Project Gutenberg. First was Across Asia on a Bicycle, a Victorian travelogue that seemed to be missed about half its story. Not bad, but not as good as an Isabella Bird book. The best part was reading about how people in China were so shocked at the authors' bicycles, and reading about all the old customs and fashions and so on. Very different from today!

Then I started Captain Blood, which I've been wanting to read for a few months now. It's exciting and swashbuckling and I can almost always laugh at the sexism/prejudicial stuff, so I'm enjoying it so far. Sabatini does have a kind of rapid-fire way of relating a story, which is nice.

About 3/4 the way thru "The Invasion" by our own William Meikle

THIS is what I mean when I talk about finding jewels here.

The story is fast moving, and there are some great plot twists......can't wait to see how it ends....

Elita Daniels and now Meikle.....and I"m sure there are others just waiting to be discovered.

Life is good again.

I'm reading Raymond Chandler's "The Long Goodbye" on my Sony. Can't tell yet if I like it more than "The Big Sleep," but certainly enjoying it!

I just read Darcia Helle's "The Cutting Edge." I reviewed it here. It's a dark comedy about a hairdresser with dreams of killing, and a serial killer who's about to meet up with her in the most interesting way.

Sabatini is probably one of my favorite all time authors. He sometimes starts slow, but then grabs you hard and takes you on a great run.

I'm continuing on my leisurely read through Henry James shorter fiction - uploaded here by our own Patricia Clark.

Rather than doing a chronological read through, I'm progressing alphabetically by title - so I randomly experience the writing in its different levels of maturity. So far it's been quite rewarding.

I've gotten spoiled by cheaper books, but I think I'm going to download the first in the Parasol Protectorate series (Soulless) for Kindle as my next read even though it's at the high end of what I usually spend. Since it is on Amazon's 4 for 3 it was tempting to buy 4 paperbacks and get one free one...but that would cost me 25 dollars upfront instead of 8...

I wouldn't personally spend 25 dollars on this series, but that's my taste of course. I bought the first one for $7.99 on ebooks.com and I'm not planning to buy another, not at that price anyway. It's a fun romance, but the characters are rather shallow.

I had not heard of this series so I went and read a few reviews on Amazon...and promptly downloaded Soulless. I feel the need for a little cheering up today, and that sounds like just the ticket. Thanks for mentioning it!

All of these are on my overflowing TBR. I've been grabbing them as they've come out.

I'm reading a lot of anthologies lately, the latest is "Death's Excellent Vacation" edited by Charlaine Harris. Good thing for me the Dresden SS collection "Side Jobs" comes out Tuesday hmm?
