User Poetry - Page 56

Let's try this one again. An attempt at a re-write:

Nine Little Rocks

They were the nine: Ernest, Gloria,
Carlotta, Jefferson, Elizabeth, Thelma,
Terrance, Minnijean, and Melba by name.

The weight of the negro race
sat uneasily upon their shoulders as they
climbed the steps of Central High
that pregnant day in 1957.

The violent crowd and the threats
brought them swiftly thorough the
school and to the rear doors where
they were whisked away
and that was the first day.

The second day, less protest but
never would it end. The nine were
cursed at, spit upon and tormented
by their white classmates and the
public alike.

The courage it must have taken
to come back day after day.
To do the school work, to
face the day, every day
knowing they were not
wanted.

Still, they persevered
Ernest graduated
the others followed and
more behind - moving
slowly, painfully
from the days of evil
to the days of hope.

I don't wish to worry you, nor make a great fuss,
cameras abound; look up on the corner and down the street;
but who's watching the watchers as they be watching us?

even from on high they be looking down upon us,
watching us carefully as we put down our feet;

they can track us in our cars as we hurry and rush,
taking pictures galore so everything's so neat;
but who's watching the watchers as they be watching us?

cameras can't lie and so 'twas ever thus,
you were duly spotted, then logged on a sheet;
I don't wish to worry you, nor make a great fuss.

it matters not a jot you can mutter and cuss,
they'll make it all nice and so very neat;
but who's watching the watchers as they be watching us?

it's a matter of concern, even of mistrust,
heaven knows it is hardly a treat.

Yes, Geoff, that's a wonderful poem, and timely. It's a fact of life that privacy is in large part a thing of the past, but we still have to be on our guard for abuses; not just those of Big Brother, but Little Brothers as well. Perhaps it's the Little Brothers and Little Sisters that are the gravest concern of all.

a thousand million and one voices
become mere shadows of a song
blowing freely in the wind of a storm
snatching sprites from the thunderclouds
cascading tears upon the sands of time
ephemeral powerhouses crackle
unleashing coruscating energy
sparkles gaily throughout the heavens
ethereal forces commanding
impose their will upon the meekness
of earth-bound children
tied to Mother Earth's apron-strings.

Blood-Red Moon

Must write the poem
of the blood-red moon
on the days before Hallows Eve

for those vacant souls
on the internet
in the village of Mobileread

They read their books
and sometimes post
but never is it known

that each and every
one of them
is so very much alone

under that serious
blood-red moon or
the bright and shiny sun

they read their books -
their electronic books
reality is less fun

Misunderstood,
vacant and vain
they prey it doesn’t rain

for if it should
they live in fear
their battery might drain

and then they’d be
even more alone
alone and ebookless

and then would come
the night of the dead
no reader to be found

ebookless zombies
roaming the land
searching for pbook town.
