Take a vacation to the USA and give the address of your hotel as the billing address.

I got an email from "Reader Store" (took me a while to realize it was Sony and not sum unsolicited spam) that they now have much better support for Canadians:

We are happy to announce that thousands of previously unavailable eBooks are now available for purchase in Canada. We apologize for any inconvenience over the past few months and are committed to providing you access to the widest selection of digital reading content.

Yes, there are convoluted ways around this; there are good threads about that here.

I am finding kobobooks has a good selection of titles. Have you checked Sony's site as an alternative?

Generally, if an ebook does not have Canadian rights, no one will have it. If you find Amazon sells a Kindle version of the title in question, fire off a note with the specifics to Kobo and they may be able to "turn it on" in Canada. I've had that experience already.
the above bold is not true ALL the ebooks I wanted from Fictionwise were restricted, so I checked around and got them all at kindle ???

Yep. I have seen that many times - restricted to US only at Fictionwise, but Amazon will sell it to you.

Pretty clearly Amazon and Kobo are the only companies interested in the international market, so may as well give them your money where possible.

A couple e-book retailers accept Paypal. That's worked for me.

VPN client are neither sufficient, nor always necessary. It depends on the shop. Some shops check your IP address, some your credit card, some your billing address, or any combination thereof.

We have the same problems in Australia - I get so angry when I want to buy a book and find that it's not available here. I wanted to buy the Lars Brownworth book "Lost to the West", but it only available here in P book, and at a higher price than I could get it by ordering the pbook from Amazon in USA. But I can buy the pbook from USA yet can't get the ebook here. Makes perfect sense doesn't it.

And as is increasingly common, that book is available on the darknet.

And you could log it here :-

Thank you and I have just done this. I haven't gone to the dark side yet but one day my frustration level will get the best of me!

It's all due to the Agency model. The publishers are coming down hard with higher prices and geo-restrictions. It all started with Apple and there deal with the big publishers who saw there chance to change the way how e-books was sold up until then.

In my opinion publishers couldn't care less if e-books succeeded or not. There main interest is to secure the future of the paper-books and there old fashion way of doing business.
