I can tell you why. For me, at least. I got fed up with the agency pricing, and the fact that ebooks available as paperbacks cost more than hardbacks, and got myself a Free Library of Philadelphia library card. I've barely shopped for books since then.

I bought an e-book this morning and a print book last week. I'm doing my part to keep the industry (fellow authors) in business.

I bought General Rick Hillier's "A Soldier First" last week from Kobo. It's getting frustrating trying to find current Canadian nonfiction in e-format. I don't want to go back to buying hardcovers!

In October I purchased 10 e-books and 1 p-book. I also downloaded some of the free ebooks on offer.

I can absolutely see why this would be a strong disincentive. It seems like everything they do screams of greed.

I should probably also mention that I tried Smashwords, and bought several books from there, but it's just too difficult to sort out the wheat from the chaff. At least IMHO.
I think the industry needs to focus more on selling books. At the library, it is so much easier to find the books I want, and they have links to similar books, etc. I can't find this at an ebook store. Well, I guess I could if I had a Kindle, but I really wanted the ability to shop in more than one place for a book. (Which subsequently backfired on me, when all the books started to come out at the same price!) ![]() |

I bought an ebook from B&N last night. I'm about to buy 2 or 3 dtbs from Amazon, as soon as I figure the best configuration of items in my cart to get free shipping.

I bought four paper books yesterday. They were cookbooks for my newly-married niece.
Paper books for myself? I bought five in August. |

I bought Cherie Priest's Clementine when it went on sale as an ebook a few weeks ago, and I just bought a paper book yesterday. As soon as I get another Amazon gift card (from one of those "search and win" sites), I'm planning on buying more.
Maybe it's just a dry spell before the holiday sales? I know I can't afford to buy books full price except very rarely, so I almost always wait until they go on sale. I'm guessing other people are waiting for the cheaper prices, too. :/ |

In the past month or two, I've bought five e-books from Smashwords and five from Amazon. I've also downloaded some free books from here, Amazon and Project Gutenberg.
I haven't bought a new paper book for at least a year, and probably only bought about one a year new - most of my paper book buys were second hand. Most of the books I've bought in the past year have been for my son. He just turned three earlier this week, and he loves books. |

My last real book purchase was on Sunday 17th October. It was "The Party Thieves" by Barry Cassidy. This is a report by a senior journalist about the appalling political shenanigans in Australia over the last few years. I bought the real book because it won't show up as an ebook for years, if ever, and I really wanted to read it right now.
My last ebook purchase was on Friday 22nd October (1am this morning). It was "Philippine Fever" by Bruce Cook. This is a crime thriller. I tried to buy the real book in the local shops when it was first published, but couldn't find it. I just happened to see it in the Amazon Kindle store late last night. So, whether I buy a real book or an ebook, depends a lot on availability. I prefer to buy ebooks though, because of the convenience factor. But I still buy real books. |

The last book I bought was a p-book version of Michael Crichton's Pirate Latitudes from Wally World last Saturday. I've already chopped off the spine, scanned it and am now reading it on my TV.

I've been snagging interesting free books to read, since I am unemployed I don't have as much disposable income.
I won't be doing too much (entertainment) reading, since I just went back to school this week. Now I'm trying to read a Medical Terminology book...My brain hurts!! |
